9 Places To Visit In Bellingham When It's Raining (Because It's Always Raining)
Amber Armstrong

Living in Bellingham, WA means that I'm no stranger to the rain. It's pretty much a constant here and something that I have had to get very comfortable with. It's easy to think that the rain means boring days spent at home, especially since so many of the activities Bellingham is known for are outdoor ones. This is definitely not the case!

While there are tons of awesome things to do in Bellingham when it's nice and sunny, there are still plenty to do when it's raining:

1. Visit CreativiTea.

CreativiTea is one of my favorite places to visit in Bellingham. It's a fired-art studio, which means people get to come in, pick out, and paint pottery or make fused glass places. They have a super wide collection of materials and they also serve tea and tea-treats while you paint! It's a great way to spend a rainy afternoon.

2. Go to Boulevard Park.

Okay, so this is technically an outdoor activity because it's a park, but it's gorgeous in the sun or the rain. Grab a raincoat or an umbrella and take a stroll over the boardwalk, all the while enjoying the nice view of the sound. Also, there's a nice coffee house in Boulevard so you can always stop for something hot to drink and a yummy pastry.

3. Browse The Comics Place!

The Comics Place is a super fun store to spend some time in. They have a great selection, are super knowledgeable, and there's always something new to find. Even if you're not super into comics, it's fun to go to look at the other pop-culture things and to admire the art!

4. Eat some treats at AB Crepes.

Need a cool and unique place to grab a bit to eat? Visit AB Crepes. They specialize in AMAZING crepes, both sweet and savory, that you won't be able to get enough of. Plus, they're open super late for when you're desperate for a great midnight snack.

5. See a show at Mount Baker Theatre.

Mount Baker Theatre always has cool shows going on and it's a great activity to do while it's raining outside. Make a night out of it, grab a bit to eat, and spend the rest of the evening enjoying some incredible live performances with friends!

6. Spend some time at Village Books!

Village Books is a great local bookstore that has a large selection, a cozy atmosphere, and it always hosting interesting events. A lot of the events are free, too, which makes it a nice thing to do for those on a budget. It's also connected to The Colophon Cafe, a great place to go for a bite to eat or a coffee!

7. Go to Avalon Records!

The oldest record store in Bellingham, Avalon has an incredible collection of new and used records. It's a lot of fun to stroll through the shop and browse, especially when you find a gem of a record!

8. Stroll through Whatcom Museum!

Focus on the art, nature, and history of Bellingham. Whatcom Museum is full of cool and interesting exhibits, each embodies pieces of Bellingham's history! This is an especially cool place to go if you're new to the city of hosting someone who has never been here before.

9. See a movie at Pickford!

Pickford is a super cool theater that shows independent films and serves snacks, beer, and wine. It's a really great place to go to see something unique and interesting. A film that you wouldn't normally see in commercial movie theaters.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
