Coming into this game, Belgium were clear favorites. Japan has never had that much success in the World Cup, having only made it as far as the round of 16. However, even though Belgium has never made it to a World Cup final, they have made it to the semis, all the way back in 1986. And they also finished made it to the quarters in the 2014, and look to have one of their strongest squads ever.
However, this was not the case. The first half of the game was very back-and-forth. Very good plays by Belgium were matched by plays just as good from Japan. But no goals were scored. But just three minutes after the second half started, this was no longer the case. Japan was able to put it into the net with a quick turnaround. And just four minutes later, in the fifty-second minute, Japan put in a stunning goal from outside the box to lead Belgium two-nil. At this point, everyone was utterly confused, even Japanese fans I bet.
Everyone was thinking that yet another favorite might be eliminated again. However, Belgium answered quickly about 20 minutes later. With some great passing, crossing, and ball movement, they were able to create many opportunities and put two in the back of the net.And by the time stoppage time rolled around, everyone expected this to be another one of those stalemates that end in penalty kicks.
But alas, after a Japanese corner which was expected to be one of the last chances of the game, Belgium broke away quickly through the open field and were able to score in the last few seconds of the game. Now they will go on to face Brazil, who just beat Mexico 2-0. What a match!
