Every aunt has a unique bond that cannot be broken with their nieces and nephews. Ever since I was young I patiently awaited the arrival of my niece. I was so excited when I heard the big news and began thinking of all the things we would do together. Since then, these are my top five reasons why being an aunt is the best.

1. You Are Their Role Model

They look at you and are amazed with everything you do. Even when you feel like giving up, you hear that little voice say, "I want to be just like you when I am older." and this keeps you pushing forward. It feels good to have someone look up to you because they see themselves following in your footsteps someday.

2. They Are Your Little Sidekick

My favorite thing to do is curl my nieces hair and dress her up, just as I do. It doesn't even matter where we are going, just the fact that we are going out together is enough. For example, you could be going to the grocery store or BMV, and they are thrilled to tag along. No matter where you are headed, you can always count on them.

3. They Tell It Like It Is

Sometimes the truth comes out, and leave it to our nieces and nephews to speak their minds. They have no problem telling you how pretty or sometimes how ugly that outfit really is. No matter how much you argue with them, they will stick with their answer and it is nice because you receive an honest opinion.

4. You Can Return Them

Not that you would ever want to give them back, but sometimes it is nice, especially after a long day. You have the option to give them back, but even if I am exhausted I am always sad to see my niece go.

5. Your Relationship Is Complex

Sort of like your sister, your own child, and more like a best friend. This is why we form a unique bond with our nieces and nephews. One minute we are teaching them and the next we are dancing and singing. They are everything in one small person.
