Lately I've been so concerned with the future and how things are going to play out. Then my journalism professor said something that's really been sticking with me: "Journalism isn't thinking, it's doing. You have to go out there and do it."
And that is exactly what I've been doing. Pitching stories and getting published, applying for internships, staying involved on campus. Do whatever it is in your related field that you can now. You absolutely do not have to wait; there is always a place for someone. Don't be afraid to reach out to people and ask for help or establish connections. Get whatever experience you can get your hands on.
Now, if you're not passionate about what you're studying...you're not going to have motivation to pursue any opportunity. You're not going to be giving it your all. If you've taken major classes and despised them, get out while you can. You have to be honest with yourself: remember your work isn't "thinking" it's "doing." Don't pursue something simply because you think it's trendy, or that it will bring stability. Realize all of the hard work that goes into careers in your area...and think long and hard about whether or not you will be driven to put in that hard work.
You might like the idea of what your intended career might be, but it doesn't necessarily mean you will like the actual practice of it. Don't torture yourself.
This is something I've learned throughout my first years of college; I find that in my major classes, even though I absolutely get stressed and overwhelmed, I genuinely want to do whatever it is I'm doing. I want to get the interviews. I want to write the story. I want to go out there and cover that event. I don't feel the same way about some of my general requirement classes and that's okay...as long as you're driven in your major.
The best way outside of class work to figure out what you want to do is practicing in real world scenarios. What would a day at work look like....find out. Talk to professionals in your prospective fields, get those internships, and join that club.
