On Being A Roommate

Having roommates is a much different experience than I thought it would be. Maybe I just got lucky, and was blessed to have two such kind and responsible roommates, but for me, sharing a room with two people I didn't know before September has been an incredible learning experience.

Growing up with a brother, I was lucky enough to never have to share a room. My room was often a mess- what I claimed was due to my busy schedule was also due to the fact that it simply didn't bother me. I could happily leave papers all over my desk and clothes flung over chairs, and I would come home every day and continue to live my life in my somewhat untidy space.

Living with two very clean people, I have been forced to rethink the way that I treat my space. Our room is very small, so it is essential that I keep my things on my side. One of my roommates (you know who you are!) is the cleanest person I have ever met. I have no idea how we got matched up by the roommate survey where I checked off "somewhat clean" under cleanliness, but here I am in a room with someone who takes a Mr.Clean Magic Eraser to the walls. Now, I am not a slob, but it is not second nature for me to make my bed, and my desk is often piled with coffee mugs and papers and post-it notes. After a few comments about being "the messy roommate", I have been trying to change my ways, and believe it or not I feel as though I have improved from my previous state.

Aside from improving my tidiness, my roommates have helped me with time management and responsibility, motivating me with their early rising and hours in the gym and the library. When I see how productive they are being it makes me want to be better, and I already feel the results of their influence. They generously share food and clothing, cleaning supplies and school supplies, whenever any of us is in need. They are unfailingly kind- leaving every morning to "have a great class!" is the nicest thing in the world, and I appreciate it every time.

I have learned that being a good roommate requires the same attention necessary for any friendship, and that it is a constant test of responsibility and communication. Sharing a room has been a very positive experience for me in my first few months of college, and my roommates have taught me life skills that cannot be taught in the classroom. I many not start using a Magic Eraser on the walls, but I will be conscientious of what I can do to improve our space, and will appreciate living with two lovely people every day.

I came to college dreading living in close quarters with two complete strangers, but having roommates has been the best part of my college experience thus far.

As an English Major in college, I have a lot of writing and especially creative writing pieces that I work on throughout the semester and sometimes, I'll find it hard to get the motivation to type a few pages and the thought process that goes behind it. These are eleven thoughts that I have as a writer while writing my stories.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.

For many undergraduates across the nation, the home stretch has begun. Only one more semester remains in our undergraduate career. Oh, the places we will go! For the majority of college seniors, this is simultaneously the best and worst year out of the past four and here’s why.

1. The classes you are taking are actually difficult.

A schedule full of easy pottery throwing and film courses is merely a myth on the average campus. With all of those prerequisites for the upper-level courses and the never-ending battle you fight each year during registration for limited class seats, senior year brings with it the ability to register for the final courses you need to fulfill your major. Yet, these are not the easy entry level courses. These are the comprehensive, end of major, capstone courses designed to apply the knowledge from all your previous courses, usually in the form of an extensive research paper or engaged learning project. The upside is you actually probably really enjoy these classes but alas there is no room for slackers here.

1. You're tired of school food and have resorted to surviving off junk food and cereal.

2. Your financial aid/money is running out...and chances are it all went to textbooks and takeout.
