We live in such a beautiful place and it’s so important for us to protect our earth. For future generations to enjoy what we have, it is up to us to minimize our ecological footprints. The key is to minimize waste while maximizing use. I’ve come up with 10 simple steps to help you become a more eco-friendly person. Together we can make a difference and protect our planet!

1. Recycle!

I know this one is obvious, but it's one of the easiest and most important things you can do to make a positive impact on the environment. Recycling helps cut back on the amount of waste being produced. And with less waste being produced, there is less pollution, less energy being used, and less deforestation caused by landfill sites. I keep a small storage container in my apartment for my recyclables and place it next to my garbage bin to remind to always recycle when possible.

2. Use reusable bags

By using reusable bags, you are reducing the use of plastic. There is a terrifying amount of plastic in our ocean due to pollution and waste. Grab some reusable bags next time you're at the grocery store to help protect our ocean and sea life, and always keep them in your car so you don't forget them.

3. Always keep a travel coffee mug and water bottle in your bag

Keep yourself from purchasing a bottle of water whenever you get thirsty by always having a water bottle with you. This is better for the environment and your wallet! Also, keep a reusable coffee cup in your bag for the next time you want to grab a coffee. This is a great way to reduce waste and some coffee shops even offer you a discount for using a reusable cup.

4. Keep your jars and containers from products

Instead of throwing away the jars and containers from products, reuse them for storage. I always save my coconut oil jars and put nuts and trail mix in them. Some people even transform their pantries with reusable jars which aren't only eco-friendly but also super cute!

5. Say to no straws

80-90% of marine pollution comes from plastic including many straws as they almost never make it to the recycling bin. 500 million straws are used every single day in the United States. Choose to go strawless or invest in some reusable straws to help cut back on plastic waste. You can find cute glass and wood reusable straws online.

6. Shop at your local farmers market

By purchasing your produce at your local farmers market, you will reduce transportation waste and support your local economy. Plus, going to the farmers market is a fun way to spend a Saturday!

7. Walk or bike whenever possible

If you live in a town where you can walk or bike instead of driving, take full advantage of the opportunity to reduce transportation waste. Not only are these options eco-friendly but they're also a great way to get some exercise and clear your head! During my walks to class, I take time to set my intentions for the day. Exercise also puts you in a positive mindset so you'll be ready to take on your day!

8. Start using Ecosia

Ecosia is an eco-friendly search engine. Each time you search the web, a tree is planted in return. If you're anything like me, you probably use Google or another search engine several times a day. By switching to Ecosia, you'll be positively affecting our environment. I have made Ecosia my internet homepage on my computer to make sure I never forget to use it.

9. Start using coconut oil

Coconut oil can be used for both cooking and personal care. Coconut oil can be heated at high temperatures without becoming carcinogenic, making it great for cooking. It can also be used as a makeup remover, shaving cream, moisturizer and hair mask. By using coconut oil, you'll be reducing the number of other products you buy, which in return, will reduce waste.

10. Eat less meat

Last but not least, eating less meat can make a huge difference in the environment. The meat industry is responsible for using a large amount of water, creates pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, and habitat destruction. I understand not everyone wants to go vegan or vegetarian, but simply reducing the number of meat and animal products you consume will make a positive difference. "Meatless Mondays" are a great option for eating less meat as you dedicate one day a week to eating only plant-based foods.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
