Because Of Kappa Alpha Theta

The reasons I am who I am.

Because Of Kappa Alpha Theta
Emily Evenson

Recruitment has recently ended and we welcomed home 23 wonderful new members. While I was extremely busy during those four days and barely got any sleep, I was able to reflect on why Kappa Alpha Theta is so important and what it has done for me.

Kappa Alpha Theta has given me leadership opportunities.

Kappa Alpha Theta’s tagline is “leading women”. Being in a sorority has opened me up to an abundance of opportunities to lead. Whether it’s being a part of a committee or going to the Alpha Chapter to participate in a leadership conference. This year in Theta has really shown me my leadership potential and I want to share that with the rest of the chapter. Later this fall I plan to put in interest for an executive position because I want to help better my chapter. I am so grateful for the leadership opportunities my sorority has provided me with so far in my college experience. I want to continue to live up to our forever important tagline of “leading women.”

Kappa Alpha Theta has given me confidence.

The thought of being surrounded by a group of women who share my values is inspiring. I am reminded of this each day when I am walking to class and a sister yells my name to say hello. When I wear my letters to class I am more likely to participate in discussions to show everyone I am part of an intelligent group of women. I have been given the confidence to branch out in our chapter. If anyone would have told me a year ago that I would apply to fly halfway across the country to meet other Theta women for a conference, I would have said, “you are crazy.” Being a part of this organization has given me the confidence I need to reach my fullest potential.

Kappa Alpha Theta has given me my family.

I’ve met sisters who encourage me to go beyond what I expect of myself, sisters who know exactly when I need to eat ice cream and watch a movie, and sisters who will just sit with me while I study in the library. Having a support system that I can always count on means the world to me. Having a group of women I can cuddle up with on a Friday night and order take-out and watch a movie with is a great feeling. Even though I’m only half an hour away from my family, I know my home is only a few minutes up the road when I’m here.

Kappa Alpha Theta has given me my best friends.

I had always known that joining a sorority meant gaining new friends however, I was unaware of the impact these girls would have on me. For the first time in a while, I have found a group of women who I know always have my back. I have a support system I can always count on no matter where we are or what time of day it is. They are my shoulder to cry on and always there to laugh with me when I think ordering a Trenta at Starbucks is a good idea.

This summer while at the conference I was lucky enough to meet my best friend. I never imagined I would meet someone so inspiring, caring, and passionate about life. While we may be 547 miles away I know I can always count on her for anything. I am forever grateful for Theta for granting me my "twin star". Joining this organization I had no idea I was going to find my best friends and future bridesmaids.

Kappa Alpha Theta has made me a better version of myself.

Kappa Alpha Theta has given me so much confidence and love that I have realized how to continue to better myself. I have learned it's okay to fail sometimes as long as you use it to fuel your motivation for success. I have been taught that I am always going to be supported by my sisters no matter what I may be struggling with. I have learned that in order to create the best version of myself I must believe in myself.

Because of my sorority, I am so many things. I am a confident leading woman, I am continuing to grow, I am surrounded by people who love me, and I am striving every day to become the best version of myself. I am a Kappa Alpha Theta.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
