There are so many great things about living in Lubbock. I mean, it's home of the Red Riders, so how could you not love it? Going to college in a town like Lubbock is great, because the community lives and breaths Texas Tech. But sometimes, breathing gets a little hard when the wind starts blowing.

Wind is the biggest struggle of being in Lubbock, so here are 10 ways that you can beat the wind, and be living like a pro.

1. Want to curl your hair today? Don't. Throw it in a ponytail.

Or a bun, which will decrease your chances of getting smacked in the face with hair even more. Either way, it's not a good idea to wear your hair down in Lubbock. Your curls will not withstand the wind, so just save your hair from the heat damage, and find yourself a cute ponytail hairstyle.

2. NEVER. WEAR. LIP GLOSS.

We all know the feeling of lip gloss sticking to our lips. There's a reason why girls in Lubbock always wear matte lipstick. Just stick to that trend and save yourself the pain.

3. Dresses are a no - go.

We all want to dress up and look our best, but dresses are not the way to do that when the wind is a million miles an hour. The closest you should get to a dress is a jean skirt. Jean skirts are heavy enough to not blow up in the wind, so if you're trying to dress up for a night out, grab your jean skirt and your cowboy boots, because it is Lubbock, after all.

4. You should probably take a bus... you might get blown off your bike.

Remember the Wicked Witch of the West from the Wizard of Oz? When she rode her bike in the tornado? Basically, if you ride your bike in Lubbock, expect to turn out like the Wicked Witch.

5. Jewelry? Scarves? I think not.

Really, please don't do it. Studs are fine, chokers are fine, but that's just about it.

6. Basically, don't breathe.

When Haboobs (dust storms, for you non-Lubbock residents) roll into town, there is no stopping that powerful force of mother nature. Trust me though, you'll learn to adjust.

7. Always dress for 5 degrees colder than the weather says. The wind will always make it colder.

Weather is a special thing in Lubbock. You can walk down one street, and the sun is blazing, but then you reach a shadow and the wind makes you freeze. Layers are key in this town.

8. Put weights in your backpack to keep yourself from blowing away

Whether it's three textbooks or actual gym weights, you just need something to put in your backpack, because when that West Texas wind rolls in, it might just sweep you away.

9. Don't use umbrellas in the rain. Do yourself a favor, and invest in a rain jacket.

One of the first things I did when I moved to Lubbock was buying a rain jacket. After a huge, windy rainstorm, I realized that a rain jacket was a necessity. My cute little umbrella was no match for the wind here.

10. Don't wear flip-flops

Tennis shoes are the way to go because flip-flops will fly right off your feet. You wouldn't think that this could actually happen, but trust me, I've learned this one from experience.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
