Friendship is a two-way street. It is one thing to find a friend, but it is something else to be one. It is a specific kind of relationship that requires a certain level of intimacy. Sometimes we get so lost in school, work, new romances, etc. that we forget how to be be there for another person on that level.

Here is a guide to being the best friend you can be:

Be the friend who knows how to laugh. Life is so full of fun and laughter. Embrace it. Live for those moments with your best friend when you just cannot stop giggling for no apparent reason. Accept that neither of you are perfect and laugh at yourselves, without fear and without judgement. Laugh until there are tears streaming down your face and your stomach hurts.

Be the friend who is always there. We can get so wrapped up in our day to day lives that we miss the signs of a friend in need, or we neglect them completely. Be aware of your relationships, and do not take your friends for granted. Be there for them when they're hurting or feeling alone, and do not just call on them when you need something. Like any relationship, a friendship requires time and attention.

Be the friend who tells it to them straight. Sometimes our friends get lost in themselves or begin going down the wrong path. Be the friend who cares enough to tell them. Do not stand idly and watch them self-destruct. You must be accountable for one another. Life can get really hard at times, but a good support system can get you through most anything.

Be the friend who knows when to have fun and when to be serious. Some of the most fun times you will ever have will be with friends, but even so, there is always a time to be serious. Do not be the one who tries to laugh everything off. Laugh as much as you can, but know when to stop. Be serious about things like work and family. But also be serious about your friends. Help each other through the hard times. Be there when they've had a loss or are struggling. Help them prepare for that job interview or a big exam. Do your best to keep things balanced.

Be the friend who is supportive. Encourage your friends to do what they love and follow their dreams. Be the one to support them through the good times and the bad times. Show them that they can do anything that they set their mind to and that you will be there cheering for them all the way. Encourage them to love life and live it to the fullest.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
