Honestly answering, how many new year’s resolutions turned into new year flops? Probably too many to count, but that’s OK because I’ve found the solution for you! Every year, for the past 5 years, I’ve been telling myself the same thing, “This year, will be the year I get fit!”. But, after a week of going to the gym, suddenly I become too busy and well, who keeps a new year’s resolution anyways? The whole concept was exhausting. Nobody ever keep their new year's resolution and everyone despises the few people that do. I decided, this year, would be different though.
I asked myself several questions before putting my "new year’s resolution" plan to success. One of the most important questions was the following: “How can I so easily eat junk food and lay around all day?” And that’s when it hit me. The “lifestyle” I was living was simply a big, fat, bad habit. The key to keeping my "new year’s resolution" this year was simply making a habit of going to the gym. I thought long and hard about this, maybe I liked my bad habits, they’re comforting. But how awesome would it be to feel comforted by the gym? By sweating and feeling sore? Totally awesome!
While I realized the key to keeping my “new year’s resolution” was to start a habit, I started to realize that the word “new year’s resolution” carried so much negative baggage for me. So, I decided to ban the word “new year’s resolution”. With new years being right around the corner, you don’t have time to create a habit before 2017. But that doesn’t mean you can’t create one for 2017.
So, my final answer to you is to start a habit. Consistency is key here, I created a pattern by going to the gym around the same time every. This helped my body get used to a routine, slowly but surely going to the gym at 9am didn’t depress me, because I was use to it!
It was normal; part of my daily routine.
Banning my new year’s resolution was the best thing I ever did. Now, my question for you is what habit are you planning to create this January?
