In wake of the recent Orlando shootings, I have realized that sometimes, there are no words. But I am going to try my best.
Forty-nine people are dead. I read a report that 53 were wounded, although sometimes the numbers fluctuate depending on the news reports I read. Even then, most of the news reports are focused on the gunman and his ties to ISIS or the LGBT community. All these different politicians are stepping up to somehow sway votes their way (how despicable) and many are sitting at their computers, like I am, offering prayers and condolences.
But even more alarming to me is the general explosion of second amendment arguments, swelling and consuming everything. Many are instantly jumping to the conclusion that no guns should be banned, their guns should not be taken away, and so on.
I had a good conversation with my friends, actually, about the whole debate.
I hate the phrase, "Guns don't kill people, people kill people." Because you know, someone could not have taken a knife into the Orlando nightclub and shot 49 people dead. Maybe two, wounded a few more, before being subdued. Sure, they could have made a bomb, but unless you're an extreme extremist, when you get into one of your rages, you aren't going to sit down and take the time to make a bomb. You're probably going to grab a weapon and just go.
It seems absolutely crazy to me that we can't ban guns from people who aren't even allowed to fly. We can't ban guns from people being watched by the FBI or the police. It's insane to me that we can't ban automatic weapons designed to kill multiple people at a time. What use do you have for a gun like that but to kill people?
I'm not for banning guns altogether. My parents are hunters; We like to get a deer to fill our freezer to save money, because a permit and a rifle is much cheaper than pounds and pounds of beef. We also believe in self defense, although we're weary about concealed carry permits. (I don't know much about them, but it should come with a six-week-long course and a test and safety routine to even own one.) If someone breaks into our house, a gun is the best way to shoo them out again, and a good blow to the kneecap would probably ensure a trip to the hospital and charges pressed against them.
But (excuse my language here, but I think it's deserving) what the hell do you need an AK-47 or AK-15 for? You shoot a deer with that you're wasting good meat. Why do you need a machine gun to kill an intruder or protect yourself out in public for? Most likely you'll just shoot someone else. Those guns are meant to kill people. What in the hell would a civilian even need that for? I don't even think former veterans or active military should have them, at least in their house. If they're called for on-soil duty or to protect themselves, they can go fetch it from the armory.
If you really wanted to play with those guns, they should be kept under lock and key under your name at a shooting range, so you can play with them there, if you just like to have fun shooting them. It's way too dangerous to own one in your home, for fear that a child or family member would get at them.
Even then, all guns should be kept under lock and key. There's programming even that might be installed for new guns where it will only be able to fire or load ammunition for a fingerprint match. Maybe if we'd had that, or kept them locked up like we should have, my brother might not have gotten into the hunting rifles and taken his own life.
But back to these mass shootings, and banning guns. Sure, of course, banning assault weapons would not fix the problem. You've still got all those weapons out there, you've got the black market, and you've got crazy people who will still shoot people dead. You've still got domestic shootings and suicides.
But you know what? Isn't it worth it? Isn't it worth it if it saves just one life? Maybe it will save your child from being curious and hurting themselves. Maybe it'll save you or your family when they go to the mall, and that shooter just couldn't get their hands on a weapon because it was too hard that day?
Just one life should make it worth it. When we say we are protecting our second amendment, just remember that no one really understands what the second amendment means. It was written with the intention that the weapons of the day were muskets and balls that are really hard to reload. We don't know if it was for civilians or civilians as an armed militia. It's been so warped and twisted.
We're not banning all guns. We're banning the ones that have no other intended purpose than to literally assault people, and kill them.
And if you can't see that saving just one life is worth this kind of legislation, if you just can't stand the thought of your toy getting taken away, then shame on you. And I have no problem saying that.
