Denim is a classic and timeless garment that every girl should have in her closet. The beauty of a perfect pair of jeans is its ability to transform.
During the day your jeans can be worn with a simple t-shirt and sandals--great for class and running errands, and by night can be accessorized with a pair of sleek heels, elegant top and your choice of minimal or voluminous, and you are ready for the evening!
With so many different inspired styles of denim, including: the cropped jean, the boyfriend jean, the high-waist jean, the flared jean and the skinny jean, it can sometimes be a challenge finding what goes best with each pair of jeans. To get the most out of your denim and the ultimate flattery, here is a simple list to consider when accessorizing with your different styles of denim!
Cropped: First, when choosing a pair of cropped denim, make sure the hem of this fit hits at the mid-calf. If it is too long it just appears awkward or could be mistaken for high-waters; too short and you have pirate pants or a bad pair of jorts! The three most popular finishes found in styles of cropped jeans are hemmed, frayed and cuffed. Cropped jeans, generally, should be worn and are most flattering when paired with heels or wedges. A great springtime look is the cork or straw wedge with an ankle band. The cropped jean can be a versatile one in that it can be playful and girly when worn with colorful, floral, flowy tops, but by adding a fitted tank paired with a blazer or other choice of jacket/outerwear the look instantly becomes more sophisticated.
Boyfriend: To balance out the boyish inspired look of the boyfriend jeans, choose more girlish tops. Tank tops with extra details like embroidery, sequins, lace or feminine fitted blouses. Jewelry is another great way to vamp up this look. Also add scarves, ballet flats, gladiator sandals and other “girl only” accessories to own the boyfriend jean as your own!
High-Waist: High-waist jeans should always be paired with heels to acquire the most flattering look. Flats conflict with the attempt to elongate the leg, while a high heel compliments and finishes the look. When wearing high-waist jeans, your blouse should always be tucked in, otherwise you defeat the purpose of the style. Therefore, tailored tops are ideal. Button downs such as oxfords and classic whites, other solids and simple patterns like pin stripes or plaid usually look best. Finish this look with a slim belt to help define the mid-section. Because there is already so much “style” put into this look, simple accessories are best. For instance, a simple watch or single bangle.
Flared: This 70s inspired look goes great with peasant blouses or flowy tops. Also there are a variety of circumferences of flare styles. Finding the best width for you depends on your size and frame. If you have wider hips you should look for a more pronounced flare, and if you have a slimmer frame you need less of a flare to accomplish the look. This look also looks best with an elevated shoe, given the nature of the jean. Otherwise you will find yourself trampling all over the hem of your jeans.
Skinny: The narrow fit of the skinny jean makes this the perfect choice to be worn with riding boots or high-knee boots. This fit also looks great with flats for a more casual yet chic look, but also looks just as great with a pair of high-heels which helps add a slimming effect. Long, loose tops are a great way to contrast the tight pants and will conceal your booty. Skinny jeans are a great style to always have in your closet! The darker washes are great for more dressy outings while lighter washes tend to be more causal. Skinny jeans are also a great pair to just throw on with a t-shirt when you want to take a break from wearing sweats to class!
