Although A Very Potter Musical was made in 2009, still today new people every day watch this totally awesome musical. The first part of the Act I has nearly 11 million views, a number that increases constantly. In fact, it was voted by Entertainment Weekly as one of the “Top 10 Best Viral Videos of 2009.” This musical was created by Starkid, a theatre group from the University of Michigan that writes and produces shows, several since the success of AVPM. These include two sequels to the original, A Very Potter Sequel and A Very Potter Senior Year. However, nothing can beat the musical that started it all, and here are five reasons why.
1) Harry Potter – Duh. For anyone that has ever seen or read Harry Potter, you know that it is pretty much the best thing to ever happen to the world. This musical incorporates ideas from all of the books, mostly focusing on the first, fourth, sixth, and seventh novels. Although it does not follow the storyline exactly, there is enough inclusion of characters, themes, and ideas that it will satisfy any Harry Potter lover.
2) Darren Criss – Before I saw him as Blaine on Glee, I saw him as Harry Potter. Basically, he is the real reason I even started watching Glee – the award-winning actor and singer Darren Criss. He is one of the most talented men of this generation, both for his songwriting, singing, and acting skills. Though his portrayal as “The Boy Who Lived” is quite silly, anyone that knows talent knows that is what he gives.
3) Voldemort and Quirrel – Remember that part in the first book when Voldemort was revealed to have been using his Professor Quirrel’s body? Well, this musical shows a very interesting approach to this idea. Without wanting to give away too much, a bond is shared between the two that is incomparable to the rest of the show. Seriously, they sing together and everything. It’s adorable and wonderful, and enough alone to watch the performance.
4) Music – What’s a great musical without some great music? Well this one definitely has it, with some great songs, most of them written by Darren Criss. Some great ones are “Granger Danger,” where Draco and Ron confess their love for Hermione, and the show’s opening song, “Goin’ Back to Hogwarts.” Arguably the best song is the ballad "Not Alone,” a song originally from Criss’s own EP album, but borrowed for AVPM. This song truly exhibits the theme of friendship, constants in both the novels, the movies, and this musical rendition; it’s a really beautiful song.
5) Hilarity – This show is entertaining, romantic, musical, but most of all, hilarious. AVPM will have you begging for more, with its puns about Dumbledore’s sexuality, Ginny’s fanaticism of Harry, and pretty much anything that can be inappropriately joked about.
All in all, I firmly believe that anyone can enjoy this supermegafoxyawesome show, along with many of the other Starkid shows. My personal favorites are “Me and My Dick,” and “Starship,” but you can check them out for yourself. Obviously though, nothing will be as great as A Very Potter Musical, and you can get to the first video by going here:
