Who wasn't excited for the new Avengers? I know I was! Read this article at your own risk! SPOILER ALERT!
My ship was destroyed (by ship I mean the pairing I really liked)! I've always been a "Clintasha" (Clint Barton and Natasha Romanoff) fan. They're on-screen chemistry as well as their characterization has led me to really love this pairing. They are good for each other, and I really loved seeing them together. I walked into Age of Ultron hoping to see "Clintasha" in action, because they are awesome together, and I did get that, but I also got more than expected. Instead of getting a movement in which Clint and Natasha can be together, we are introduced to Clint's wife and kids, and my first reaction was:
When I got over my initial reaction, and I had time to think about it, I came to the realization that my ship was not completely destroyed. I've always loved Clint and Natasha together, and I was presented with another form this. They are best friends, and you see them functioning around each other. There is no way of hating Clint's family. They are adorable, and his wife does not make him choose between them and his second family (the Avengers), which just raised her up in my book. We were were presented with Auntie Nat, I mean, how adorable it that? We are also shown what a great relationship Laura (Clint's wife) and Natasha have, and they were going to name their baby after Natasha, well, if the baby had been a girl.
The movie also presented us with a new pairing, a "Brucetasha." It did seem a little forced, but I am not completely opposed to it. I really would like to see where they go with it because it could potentially be good. What I did like about this pairing was the role reversal. I know many thought that pairing Natasha with Bruce Banner just made her seem weaker, but it seemed that throughout the relationship, the one calling the shots was Natasha, not Bruce. There is also the fact that we know Natasha is no damsel in distress, yet she lets Bruce save her. I see this as her manner of making him feel better, more human, especially after the rampage he went on after Scarlett Witch played with his mind.
I really liked the fact that we got more backstory on the characters who have not had a stand-alone movie, such as Natasha (Black Widow) and Clint (Hawkeye). We were introduced to three new Avengers! Scarlett Witch (Wanda Maximoff), Quicksilver (Pietro Maximoff), and the Vision! I know that the true backstory of Wanda and Pietro cannot be used, but that doesn't mean that the backstory they were given wasn't a good one. They really tried to show how their backstory affected them and how it led to them becoming Avengers. For those who don't know their original backstory, it consists of them being Magnetos children, but since the word Mutant, or anything to do with Mutants is taboo in the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe), had to be tweaked because they don't own the rights. I think this movie served as a perfect starting point for the Vision's and Wanda's future relationship, which I really enjoyed given the fact that they get married in the comics.
Apart from my favorite pairing being destroyed, I had three other "oh-my-god" moments. The first being when Steve Rogers was able to semi lift Thor's hammer, the second when the Visions did lift Thor's Hammer, and the third was at the very end of the movie. There was a moment in which I thought that Hawkeye would be killed off because he tried saving a little boy, but instead Quicksilver died protecting both him and the little boy. I didn't want either to die, and I am fully expecting there to be some manner in which Quicksilver could be saved, (hint hint, the tech used to heal Clint in the beginning and the doctor helped to create the vision). I don't want to get my hopes up, but I can't really help it.
Overall, I really did enjoy the movie a lot. I can see why people are having mixed reactions to it though. I think everyone is entitled to their opinion, but personally, I think it was pretty good. All I can say is, go watch the movie if you haven't already, and come up with your own take!
PS: Watch the SNL Black Widow trailer with Scarlett Johansson, it's pretty funny!
