Artificial intimacy. Sounds weird, mainly because it is. The whole concept of strangers creating stimuli through youtube videos almost seems graphics. But before you classify ASMR to be rated R, hear me out.

I saw a news blurb on BuzzFeed about the increase in popularity of these ASMR videos. Wondering what all the hype was about, I decided to check it out for myself.

ASMR stands for an Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response, which is a static for tingling sensation on the skin.

ASMR videos are intended to recreate that sensation order to induce relaxation. It can include hand movements, hair brushing, or crackling noises that are designed to have a soothing effect on the audience.

One thing I found interesting was how people claim that ASMR reduces anxiety, and now that I have watched a few videos myself I can see the potential benefits. Now I still find the whole concept strange and am not considering becoming an ASMR youtube star anytime soon. But they are incredibly relaxing and I overall enjoyed the sensory explosion that occurred. I never could have imagined that the sound of brush strokes are whispering could calm my nerves but it did just that.

Along with reducing anxiety, ASMR videos are also said to help with falling asleep. Well, after the first video I watched my eyes were drooping. I felt like I had just done an hour of meditation. Several times since I watched the first video, I used them to help me fall asleep when counting sheep just doesn't cut it.

The videos in their entirety are a sensory experience. It may be completely artificial but that doesn't mean they are not effective. Some people may not have anyone to talk to at home. This provides a new way to reduce stress that doesn't require the involvement of another person.

Virtual stimulation could ever replace the effects of a big hug, but if you don't have a person to hug at the moment ASMR can help cope with anxiety with instant results.

I am not saying these videos are not weird, they certainly are. But I enjoyed them weirdness and all.

Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
