Winter finally seems like it's here with the cold weather, dark evenings, and whipping winds. All we need is a little snow, but honestly... that can wait because I feel like we didn't even have a real fall. I'm the type of person who cannot leave my dorm without my headphones. Music during the winter (especially on the long Rutgers bus rides) is what gets me through the day, but there are about five artists that I love listening to, that have a wintery type of feel:
5. Sleeping At Last
My best friend introduced me to Sleeping At Last, and I've been hooked ever since. Their compilation of all their EP's, Atlas: Year One, has some of their best songs, in my opinion. I love listening to "Saturn", especially during the winter because I just feel like I should be in the mountains somewhere, freezing my butt off, and looking up at the stars. I also really like "Turning Page", but I'm pretty sure that this song only has a wintery feel to me because it was in one of the Twilight movies, and it's always either winter or raining in that franchise.
4. Iron & Wine
I was literally just talking to my best friend about this, and I always considered Iron & Wine to be a spring-time band. But I've been listening to them a lot lately and I think my brain is starting to associate them with the wintertime. Certain songs, hands down, have a spring/summer vibe like Sodom, South Georgia. But other songs, like "Fever Dream" and "Faded From The Winter", definitely have winter vibes, which is why I love playing them during the cold months.
3. Daughter
I'm not a HUGE fan of Daughter, but I like listening to some of her songs during the winter because I'm always wrapped up in a huge sweater and squinting my eyes from the cold as if I'm in some music video. All of her songs sound super sad, which is probably why it's great for the winter; not that you should be sad, but it just helps with the mood that everything's dying.
2. Michael Buble
ALRIGHT, THIS GUY'S VOICE IS AMAZING???? LIKE HOW?????? It's not even that Michael Buble has wintery music; it's just that he has a great Christmas album that I blast every year the calendar hits December 1st. His voice is just so soothing and he reminds me a lot of Frank Sinatra (who should also be on this list, but oh well). Just hearing, "It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas" puts me in the holiday mood and makes me forget that winter is a cold, sad season.
1. Bon Iver
Justin Vernon had to take the #1 spot, and rightfully so. His pseudo-name is literally, Bon Iver, which means "Good Winter" in French. His For Emma, Forever Ago album is literally the epitome of a winter album because he created it during the winter after a hard break up. Another one of his really good EP's is Blood Bank, because one song in particular, "Woods" has literally taken my soul. This song is literally a masterpiece and words can't even explain how much I love it. I also really like, " Roslyn", which was actually on another Twilight album (honestly, if you wanna listen to some real wintery songs, just listen to all of the Twilight soundtracks). I don't know what it is about this song that screams, "WINTER," but to me, it really does. Bon Iver and St. Vincent did a really good job with this one.
