Ariana Grande dropped her fourth album, titled "Sweetener," at midnight on August 17. She happens to be one of my favorite musical artists and I encourage everyone to listen to her music.
1. "raindrops (an angel cried)"
With the song only acting as a 37-second intro to the album, Grande really shows off her talented vocals and ability to sing without instrumentals accompanying her. I think it's a really good start to the album.
2. "blazed" (feat. Pharrell Williams)
Like many of Pharrell Williams' songs and productions, this song has a groovy and almost tropical vibe. The backup vocals make the song really interesting and Grande's vocal range is really displayed through lower notes, compared to her older music. Overall, the song is good, but it's nothing special and doesn't really jump out at you. There's a good vibe to it, though.
3. "the light is coming" (feat. Nicki Minaj)
As one of the few singles Grande released before the album came out, "the light is coming" proved to the music world that this young diva was moving into a new wave of pop music. The beat and the repetitive aspects of the song make it VERY different from what Grande's music is often like. The song starts with Nicki Minaj's verse and finishes with Grande's vocals. Minaj is only in the beginning of the song, which seems odd, but I like it. It's not her most popular song, but I thoroughly enjoy her new style.
4. "R.E.M"
The song starts with a solid beat and heavy bass, which is then accompanied by Grande's vocals in a choral way. It's a love song, describing how the relationship seems to be a dream, thus the correlation to the term "R.E.M." This phrase describes the time when you're asleep but your dreams are more memorable and you have more rapid breathing, which is also part of the song (the breathing with the beat). I liked the song, and I think it's more similar to what Grande is known for; there's no belting, though.
5. "God is a woman"
Wow. If you haven't heard this song yet or seen the music video, you must be living under a rock. Released less than a day after the song came out, the music video for "God is a woman" took people's breaths away with the stunning visuals and the overall female empowering message. The song stunningly displays Grande's vocals and this could easily be one of the best songs on the entire album. The heavy beat and incredible vocals steal the show from many of the other songs on the album.
6. "sweetener"
The namesake of the album. The song starts with very impressive vocals and moves into a series of speak-singing verses from Grande. The chorus is different, but it's very intriguing, and I definitely think everyone should listen to it. While it's not my favorite song on the album, I do think Grande shows off her talents and her "new vibe" in this song. I think it could be one of the most popular songs on the album.
7. "successful"
This song is very different from the others. There is definitely more of a funky beat, and the lyrics follow along the title of the track. Explaining how successful she is for how young she is, Grande's song really shows off a unique way her voice can be manipulated and displayed. There is also a connecting factor between "successful" and many of the other tracks. The beat is accompanied by breaths being taken by Grande and other voices.
8. "everytime"
This song is another song that seems similar to the music Grande sang when she rose to stardom. The song is about going back to someone you love but is bad for you or you know you shouldn't be with. This is definitely a lesson I think people can understand and learn from. The verses and the chorus are very catchy and I think this could also be one of the more popular tracks on the album.
9. "breathin"
Another song showing off Grande's strong voice, this track has a beat that builds up as the song gets going. Starting slow, the beat comes in when the chorus plays for the first time. This has been the most catchy song on the album so far, with a steady beat and a well-written vocal range. My favorite part of the track has to be the second chorus because the music cuts out and it is only Ariana's voice.
10. "no tears left to cry"
The anthem of the album really shows that Grande is not here to play around. Growing in crazy amounts of popularity and being played on thousands of radio stations and playlists, this track has truly shown the power of Ariana Grande. As the first single released from her album, this track shows that Grande can still support herself with background vocals and has the ability to belt like she always has. It is truly a well-written, produced and executed song.
11. "borderline" (feat. Missy Elliott)
Another funky beat and vibe on this album, the track starts right away. I like the way that Grande's voice accompanies and reacts to the beat in the background of the song. It takes two minutes for Missy Elliott to come in, but her rap is less than satisfying, to be honest. It's very short and then it seems like the song just ends. It's not the best.
12. "better off"
From the first few seconds, you can tell that this is going to be a slow song. You can tell that writing and singing this song was a very emotional process for Grande to experience. The song is about being better off without a certain person in your life. It definitely proves that Ariana Grande doesn't always need to have a big show to prove that she is still one of the best artists of our generation.
13. "goodnight n go"
I think the different beat in the beginning really draws you into the song. When Grande starts singing, you can't help but nod your head along with the groove of the beat. The chorus slows down, while the verses are faster, which really emphasizes the music. This is one of her songs that really focuses on the instrumental aspect and how her voice connects and merges with the instruments. Honestly, this song is very good and very different. It could be the next radio station single, but who knows?
14. "pete davidson"
Named after her new fiancé, the song has a soft and quick beat. Grande talks about how she knows that Pete Davidson is her soulmate. The song is only one minute long, but it truly has no real substance to it. I think it's cute that she wanted to put something like that into the album, but I think it would have to be something at the beginning, like "raindrops" or "Moonlight" from her last album.
15. "get well soon"
THE FINAL SONG. Honestly, the beginning has a lot of resemblance to the music from Grande's Christmas album. I really like her harmonies and the overall vocal part in this song. It's slower and more focused on her vocals, which don't always get the recognition they deserve. About two minutes into the song, the music changes a lot. It gets very soulful and stays soulful through the rest of the five-minute song. While it's not one of the best of Ariana Grande's songs on this album, I do think it is a great way to end the album as a whole.
