The next morning I woke up with the sun. I showered in the beautiful bathroom, brushed my hair and put it in a side braid down the right side of my face, dressed in the least dingy clothes I had, and walked down stairs. I heard the sound of pots and pans in the kitchen and made my way there. When I walked in I found Agitha in the beginning stages of making coffee and setting out the food to prepare for breakfast. “Good morning Agitha,” I said with a smile.
“G’mornin dear. 'Ow did ye sleep?” she asked with an almost musical tone.
“I slept amazing last night. One of the best nights I have in a very long time,” I answered walking over to the counter and looking at the spread of ingredients she had laid out. Eggs, some type of dark bread, sliced apples, brown sugar, and milk.
“I be glad to ‘ear that dear. Are ye ready for our big shoppin day?” she asked excitedly.
“I am. I picked out my nicest clothes. May I help you make breakfast since I am awake?” I asked with a hopeful smile.
“Of course ye can. Make what ye want with the apples. I just be makin eggs an some toast before we head to town,” she replied pushing the apples over to me.
“Thank you,” I said taking the apples and grabbing the brown sugar. I grabbed a knife from a rack and cut the slices into cubes. Putting them in a glass cake pan with some water and covering them with the brown sugar I put them in the over. Soon the whole kitchen was filled with the smell of my apples. It was a very sweet and spiced smell, almost like a holiday candle.
“My word. Ye apples smell wonderful me dear,” she complimented.
“Thank you,” I answered with a wide smile. It was often men complimented my cooking, but almost never women.
“Branson an Seamus both be sayin you be a mighty fine cook, but I just took that for men talk. Now I see they be knowin what they be talkin about,” she said with a chuckle. She and I both continued to laugh and have small chatter while we finished breakfast. The clock struck seven and I heard the men, and boys, make their ways down into the dining room. Agitha and I brought out the breakfast and the coffee and set it down on the table. I took my place by Seamus, and Agitha took hers by Branson on his right hand.
Just like every other meal in this house we grasped hands and Branson said grace. The boys did not talk very much due to the early hour. Seamus was normal morning Seamus and quiet barely saying a word. Branson was reading his newspaper, and Agitha sat and hummed and helped Bowen with his eggs and toast. All in all it was a quiet but wonderful breakfast. Branson complemented Agitha on the apples and she giggled and told him they were my making. He laughed and continued eating. Once everyone was finished Agitha and I cleared the table, and washed the dishes. The entire time we washed she talked on and on about how much fun we were going to have and what we were going to do.
