Per Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, this blockbuster deal stands as:
Lakers Receive: Anthony Davis
Pelicans Receive: Brandon Ingram, Lonzo Ball, Josh Hart, Three first-round picks (No. 4 of 2019 included)
While the NBA League Office has yet to send this trade through, one can expect for Anthony Davis to be playing his basketball in Los Angeles come opening night of the 2019/2020 regular season. This is a move that drastically changes the landscape of this summer's upcoming free agency and the entire league going forward. Welcome to the NBA, a 365 day affair.
From questionable eight seed holding their standing in the second class of the league while playing in the limbo of mediocrity, to major free agency destination and potential championship contender. Lakers GM Rob Pelinka has managed to pull off one of the most significant moves for Los Angeles in quite some time (also see Lebron James acquisition of 2018). Finding another star player to pair next to Lebron James was a paramount priority for this franchise heading into next year and Anthony Davis is now their guy for both tomorrow and the next five years. With the arrival of AD, the Lakers are also now in a position to go out and attract one more star player (i.e. Kemba Walker, Jimmy Butler, Kyrie Irving) in order to cement themselves as a serious title contender going forward. Look out for this team to make even more noise heading into the month of July as they aim to finish off a roster that may have the potential to bring home a Larry O'Brien.
Giving up so many young and future assets in the form of Ingram, Ball, Hart and draft picks surely has the potential to hurt this organization in the long run, putting them in serious danger of breaking down once Lebron James calls it quits. But, the NBA is a league predicated on immediate results and winning RIGHT NOW. Building for the future and accruing assets can only take one team so far before it realizes what drives this league both in terms of winning games and selling tickets, star players. With this trade, the Lakers find themselves with two of the league's top five players who are both MVP-caliber guys when at their best. On top of this, trading away Ball, Ingram, and Hart also opened up even more cap space for a team already flush with money heading into this offseason. Los Angeles still has enough money to go out and lure yet another big name this summer with a list of targets that includes Jimmy Butler, Kemba Walker, and Kyrie Irving. Anthony Davis in the bag. Lebron James leading the way. And still not done yet. Welcome to the NBA offseason.
Dare to say, the Los Angeles Lakers might just be back on their way to glory.
