Dear Taylor,
Let me start this off by telling you how much I love you. You've been my favorite singer since 2006 when you released your debut album. When I was younger, I looked up to you. You were a woman of character and kindness. Now, as a marketing professional, I look up to you as well--because you are the foremost marketing genius in the entertainment industry. A perfect example of this is the hype you created for your most recent single, "Look What You Made Me Do." Simply brilliant. I commend you.
Taylor, you have a platform that only a handful of people in the world have. For a long time, you've used that platform for positivity--like that time you raised awareness about childhood cancer with your emotionally compelling song, "Ronan." Personally, I've always felt like you understood me in a tremendous way. You've helped me work through friendships ending, life transitions, and breakups. Thank you for all you've done to make me feel better when times were tough.
Your new song, "Look What You Made Me Do," is destined to be a chart topper. Musically, I think it's some of your best work yet. From a worldview perspective, however, I think it falls short of your potential.
I know you've been through hell. Some of it might be self-inflicted, and some of it might not be. I don't have a true perspective on it all because I hear everything through the media, which is never fully honest. I just see how many people speak negatively of you, and how many celebrities who are known for their hostility that has come up against you. Truthfully, I'm on your side. I believe that you entered into fame as an innocent, trusting girl who achieved her dreams. And then, you were eaten alive. The old you died, and now you're back...and you're different.
You may not realize the depth of the impact you have, but with over 100 million followers on Instagram alone, you touch a lot of people. You've inspired so many and encouraged them to strive for their own dreams, as well. You've helped people deal with heartbreak and sadness in their lives. You've done so much for so many people--and I am one of those people.
That's why I think I'm disappointed with "Look What You Made Me Do." Not because it lacks talent (because it's filled with talent--lyrically, musically, vocally, and creatively), but because it encourages vindictiveness. It tells a story about exacting revenge on those who have done you wrong. Its message is one of spite, one that both fuels and terrorizes your enemies because they are aware that they killed the old you...but they are also aware that the new you is coming for their throats.
Take it from me, Taylor. Vengeance isn't as sweet as it may seem.
You have an opportunity to spread a message of forgiveness; one the world hears far too little of. You have an opportunity to be different. Instead, you chose to stick with the norm--a tale of vengeance, anger, and pride. Look, I'm not saying you're wrong to do so. That's what everyone does. By the standards of this world, you are certainly entitled to vengeance and anger.
But I have always held you to a higher standard, due mainly to my deep respect for you--as an artist, but more importantly, as a person. For the first time in my life, I realized that you were acting just like everybody else. And that kind of sucked, because I've always thought you were different.
You don't have to be different. You don't really owe anything to anyone. You certainly don't owe anything to me. If vengeance is the path you choose, you have every right to do so. But Taylor, you're worth so much more than that.
You're worth more than the words of your haters as they pierce through your skin. You're worth more than the sabotage efforts of other envious celebrities. Above all else, you're worth more than vengeance. You're worth more than anger.
You're worthy of love. And you're worthy of giving it, too.
You will probably never read this, and that's okay. But if you do, I just want you to know three things:
1. I will always love you – both the old Taylor and the new Taylor.
2. Jesus will always love you, too.
3. You are worth more than vengeance.
Thank you for creating music that inspires people. I hope you continue to do just that.
Love,
Chrissy, your fan since 2006.
