To some, the name Oberto may mean little to nothing. To others, it may be the name of their all-time favorite jerky. But to me, the name Oberto means so much more.
I was born and raised in a small town in southern Indiana: Madison. Madison is a charming, historic town with a population of around 12,000 people. You, Oberto, may know us as the home to the H1 Unlimited Hydroplane, Miss Madison. Hydroplane racing holds a special place in my heart, as well as the entire Madison community. Since I was old enough to walk, I have attended the annual Madison Regatta, where the fastest circuit racing boats in the world race right here on the Ohio River. Not to mention, the boat shop where Miss Madison resides is my neighbor. Every year, I watch as the crew prepares the boat for another year of racing.
The hydroplane circuit is a clean, wholesome sport that Madison embraces whole-heartedly. Families gather on the Ohio River bank every summer to support our hometown boat. Many even travel on summer vacation to support the home team at other race locations. We truly believe that Miss Madison belongs to us all. Our undying community support proves that.
My memories watching Steve David and now Jimmy Shane represent Oberto and Madison are some I will forever cherish. But this year, I am saddened to learn that after 15 years of partnership, Oberto no longer plans to sponsor Miss Madison. I understand the company believes this money will have larger benefits elsewhere; however, I urge Oberto to consider learning more about the hydroplane fans and the impact of your partnership before pulling the plug completely.
Browsing through the Oh Boy! Oberto Unlimited Hydroplane Facebook Page (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Oh-Boy-Oberto-Unlim...) you can find numerous supporters of the hydroplane as well as Oberto Beef Jerky. The fans buy Oberto Beef Jerky to support our favorite boat's sponsor and then continue to buy it because it's good. Fans love Oberto, that is why it is so hard for us to see you leave. We know that Oberto is the last recognizable sponsor left in hydroplane racing, sponsoring a boat everyone loves with a product we enjoy. Oberto leaving the sport could eventually lead to the end of hydroplane racing. Although you may believe hydroplane racing is already dead, it is not. There are so many fans who truly care about hydroplane racing and the partnership with Oberto. Every year, people bring new friends and family to watch Oh Boy! Oberto/Miss Madison on the Ohio River, and every year new people fall in love with the sport and our boat.
I am not naïve enough to believe one more letter will change your decision. I just want you to understand, hydroplane racing will never be the same without your support. Since I can remember, I have thoroughly enjoyed watching Oh Boy! Oberto/ Miss Madison every July 4th weekend. Thank you for the many memories and years of partnership with our community.
Sincerely,
Katie Browning
