An Open Letter To Niantic

Pokemon GO is awful

I love Pokemon, but this is just awful. When you compare it to the actual handheld games, it's obviously not the same.

The augmented-reality game has been an incredible success, taking the world by storm. But let's be honest here- it isn't good. We all know well that we wished for Pokemon to really exist when we were kids. Mainly Charazard, but I digress.

At first, Pokemon GO was so exciting. I thought I was going to get to live in my dream of becoming a Pokemon Master through the technological advancements of today. But this isn't like the old or original Pokemon Games. This is you scaling a city just for the slight chance of catching another Pidgey. With the gaming mechanics of the Pokemon Gameboy and 3DS games, you can actually train your Pokemon, instead of just constantly catching the same Pokemon just to level up the one with the highest CP and IV. You can only catch generation 1 Pokemon. There's over 700 Pokemon, and Niantic decides to only release the first 150? What about my dream of becoming a Pokemon Master? I mean, I can basically recite all the Pokemon Theme songs by heart at this point.

They've lost around 30 million users within the first month. People may see this as something to laugh at but games normally lose 70% of their users within the first 30 days.So this is actually quite a feat. It still grips the large majority of its users. Some may be actual Pokemon fans, while some may not be. It doesn't matter. This game has created a hype that hasn't gone away and causing people to actually get outside.

When it first released, the amount of bugs were unparalleled. Every new game has bugs, but Niantic took it to another level. Game crashes, freezes, Pokemon not being caught when they clearly were, gyms not loading, GPS errors, etc. You ever catch a Pokemon and the ball just sits there not moving, slowly giving you an anxiety attack?

Let's not even mention the tracking system, which was incredibly useless. You might as well consider the original tracking system a bug in itself.

Now that Niantic has finally started banning people for hacking, they're finally doing something right. Except now, legit players are being banned for being a level too high. People are reporting other players if they claim a gym with a high level account. Roughly around 5-10, to be exact. Just because I live in NYC and go to Central Park everyday doesn't mean I cheat, guys. Leave those accusations for the botters and spoofers.

Niantic- DO BETTER.

Sincerely,

An aspiring Pokemon Master.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

There have been many lessons learned.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
