An Open Letter To Me A Year Ago

You think you know everything now.

An Open Letter To Me A Year Ago
Bridgette Connolly

Dear me,

Slow down. You are so eager to move on from everything in your life. You think you are ready for college, new friends and ready to be away from what you are familiar with. You're ready for it, but just so naive. There are more important things you need to be thinking about right now. Time is about to fly past you and you are not going to be ready for. So much is about to happen that you are not going to be ready for. You have no idea what is yet to come.

Stop complaining about stress.

You think you have a lot of homework now? Ha. Yeah, just wait, and you are in less classes than you were in your senior year. You don't study for tests now, but think you can do that in college. Now the only stress you have comes from school; pretty soon it is going to come from every single thing in your life. You're going to survive slightly.

Spend more time with family.

You are just going to fall into the deep, vast hole called college that takes over your life. You are not going to have much time to see the most important people in your life all the time. Spend as much time with them now that you can. Eat all the food that they make now that you can. You are going to miss it, I promise.

Do not take your friends for granted.

It is going to be so hard to leave them at the end of the summer. You are going to cry your eyes out, and so will they. Spend as much quality time with them too as possible. Distance is hard for friends just like it is for partners. But you will make it work. But for now, go crazy as much as you can.

Stop caring about what people think about you.

In high school, it is so easy to get caught up in what every single person thinks about you. That stops you from being you. It seriously does not matter! Soon enough you will learn that people really do not care how crappy you look in class. Everyone is in their own world. Just do you.

You have no idea what you are getting yourself into.

From you to me, some crazy stuff will go down. You will go crazy, you will also go down but come back up. So just know that you will be okay. So much is going to happen in your life, and it is a great time. Your liver loves you now, but it won't later.

You have no idea how happy you are about to become.

Everyone in your graduating class has probably seen you cry. That bugs you now, and it seems you cannot get away from them, but darling, you can. All the drama, heartbreak and annoyances of that are there now go away. I mean, you get new ones, but the past is in the past. You will get sad at times of course, but you have never been happier. You are in the time of your life. I'm proud of you, dude. So now prepare yourself, because so much is yet to come to you, young one.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
