An Open Letter To Grandma In Heaven
Briana Mitchell

Dear Grandma,

Where do I even begin? I have looked up to you since I was a little girl. Since the day I was born you helped by parents in raising me, which I know was no easy task. I thoroughly remember taking naps in your lap every day after lunch, while you watched Young and The Restless, and spending numerous afternoons swimming and baking pies. I also remember being so excited to get to your house in the morning before the school bus came, and also looking forward to getting off the bus so I could see you again. My favorite memories are from my childhood because of you.

Growing up, you have always been there, whether it was softball, school, graduations, or other special events in my life, you have been there. There is not a single event that you did not attend; you were always my biggest fan. I can easily say you are my best friend and the most influential person in my life, which is why this hurts so much.

I am so unbelievably blessed to have had 22 beautiful years with you. You have shown me what unconditional love is and what a strong woman looks like. I am the woman I am today because of you. When I was debating moving away and accepting the job at Cleveland Clinic, you encouraged me to go for it, to pursue my dreams, even though I was terrified and I did it.

You have always been in my corner and you could always steer me in the right direction and for that I am forever thankful. You are the greatest grandma and role model a girl could ask for. You have always put your faith in me, and I know this is why I am successful. You taught me to reach for the stars and to never be afraid to fall. Because of you, I can say I have accomplished things most people my age have not, simply from taking your advice.

Not many people can say that their grandma is their best friend, and not many people have shared experiences like we have together. I am the luckiest girl to of had such an amazing and strong grandma. It is unfair that God decided it was your time to go, but he must have thought you served your purpose here (even if I don't agree).

Thank you for being you, and for always being my number one fan. Thank you for helping my parents raise me into the woman I am today, and thank you for always putting mine and my sister's needs first. You truly are the strongest, most selfless person I know. I miss you terribly, but you get to be with grandpa now. Give him the biggest hug for me. I love you more than you know. Watch over all of us. Heaven is lucky to have you.

All my love,

Your Oldest Granddaughter

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
