Where do you want to go?

Day Trips for GSU Students

As someone who loves to travel, I want to see just about everything that Earth has to offer. Since I go to Georgia Southern, which is located in the small town of Statesboro, GA, I want to explore other places and cities around here and save money by not staying in a hotel by making day trips, and you can too.

1. Pooler and Savannah, GA

This is obvious since Pooler and Savannah are around an hour away from Statesboro. Pooler has the new Tanger Outlet Mall, and Savannah is one of the oldest cities in the country. These are the things you can do in Savannah: go to River Street, explore antique stores (they're everywhere,) eat at several famous restaurants, Bonaventure Cemetery, Fort Pulaski, Forsyth Park, Savannah's Squares and plenty other of shopping opportunities.

2. Any of the Georgia Islands

Such as Tybee and Jekyll, going to any of the Georgia Islands makes for a great beach trip. The drive is a couple hours give or take, depending on which island you go to. Depending on the time you come and go, you can get stuck in traffic.

3. St. Augustine, FL

Although you might need to get up pretty early, the drive is only a little more than three hours, but you get to see the oldest city in the United States. Things you can do in St. Augustine: visit several historical places, visit the Fountain of Youth, kayak at Fort Mose State Park, and more shopping opportunities.

4. Hilton Head Island, SC

This is another place that makes a great beach trip, and the drive is only an hour and a half from Statesboro. Things you can do are: kayaking, paddleboarding and other water sports, go on a fishing charter boat, zipline and visit historical places.

5. Charleston, SC

Being a little less than three hours from Statesboro, this is another historical town. You can go to the city market, visit plantations, visit the world's first successful submarine, Fort Sumter, the beach, and visit Patriot's Point.

6. Atlanta, GA

The Heart of the South is three hours away (also depends on traffic) from Statesboro. There are plenty of things to do from Stone Mountain, the aquarium, the zoo, the historical sites, the shopping opportunities, sports games and even going back home to your family if you're from North Georgia.

7. Jacksonville, FL

Also a little less than three hours away, you can do things such as kayaking, paddle boarding, going to the beach, water parks, explore the city, shopping opportunities, the zoo, gardens and fishing charters.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
