American Horror Story has been an FX hit for the past six years, and everyone has his or her favorite and least favorite season. My favorite season by far was Coven followed closely with Hotel in second. My least favorite season is the most previous one, My Roanoke Nightmare, and from what I see on social media, I am not alone.
In my opinion it was more like American Horrible Story.
This was the 1st season that did not have a clear strong female leader. In the original four seasons, Jessica Lang was the main character and master mind the plot, and storyline for the most part focused on her. In Hotel, Lady Gaga seemed to pick up where Jessica Lang left off she played the Countess and again the plot basically focused on her countless betrayal of all her lovers. However this season Lady Gaga was rarely seen and played a very small and, in my opinion, very unlikeable part. I feel that keeping her as the main character would have made more sense. The plot itself was also in my opinion just simply horrendous. It started off with a couple Mat and Shelby talking about their haunted house and then mid-season the show admits that it's just a show and that actors were playing off of “real” events. It was done to shock viewers, however it really didn't shock me it more so annoyed me.
The show shows a boardroom full of snobby producers and portrays the very real evil the production business. Then the producers decide to reenact the original reenactment of the show and make a new show out of that, and it just gets hard to follow and really annoying. It also crushed the storyline of past seasons. In fact, in the fake board meeting, the producers even talk about issues with past seasons, such as in Hotel, and how people where so mad because no one ever found out who killed Holden.
Basically the show then becomes about what a money making empire American Horror Story has been and it honestly made me feel used a viewer, it took what I thought was an art form and made it all about business. This is even evident in the opening credits. There is no team song and hardly any opening credits with the creepy AHS music and creepy photo slide show as in the past; instead it is just a Mercedes-Benz commercial with some AHS music in the background. It is like the people in charge were so greedy they wanted to make even more money so they decided to place an advertisement in the opening credits and honestly its insulting as a viewer.
I had high hopes for this season because of all the commercials and rumors set out by FX, but was defiantly let down and disappointed. After this disaster of a season, I strongly doubt the series effectiveness to attract attention from myself and others next season. I think the only way for me to try to get into the next season would be if Lady Gaga had a huge part, if the plot was more thought-out, and was more interesting such as the cult murders of the 1960's or just about unsolved murders in general and didn't diverge from that story arch as much.
