After hearing what happened in Orlando, I am in utter shock and sadness of what our world has come to. I am not going to express any political remarks in this article, nor do I want to, but rather my concern with the amount of hate there really is in this world and how there isn't enough being done about it.
Fifty people died, and we are not taking enough into consideration about the deaths as well as lives that these deaths affected — their families and friends. It has been hard to imagine how I would have been affected if I knew any of the victims personally. We all should take a moment and reflect on the lives that were taken due to a man full of hatred, not why or what made him this way, but the fact that this is a continuous problem that needs to stop. Rather than letting the media and politics influence us, we need to realize not why this world is full of hate, but that we all need to learn how to love.
We are now so argumentative as a society, and if someone disagrees with us we are combative. We live in a society where if someone doesn't like something about another person they are ostracized completely or made targets. The USA is targeted because we are a free country, so there is hate in the world because of this.
Growing up in Boston, and now living right outside of the Metropolitan area has made me extremely aware of hatred. The Boston Marathon Bombings sparked my insight of how much hate there really is, and I want to be a part of a giant movement that ameliorates it. At the time of the Boston Marathon Bombings, I did so by partaking in The One Fund.
Capturing the Bombers, The One Fund and doing everything the city could to provide for the victims gave Boston a new slogan, "Boston Strong." This saying is known all throughout Massachusetts. Whether you're from just outside the city like me, or all the way in Western Mass.
Now put this into perspective, if an entire state can show a meaning to the whole country, that shows that as Americans, we're capable of anything. So many people in Massachusetts came together to support the victims, the families of the victims and first responders. We should all, as a country, be doing the same thing for Orlando.
Since we all think so differently from one another it's hard for us as a country to come together since we're all so diverse in regard to our opinions. We let our political views, social class, race, gender, etc. define us and tear us apart. We should all be appreciating these, so that we can be more open minded. If our world wasn't so close-minded, there wouldn't be as much hatred. Rather than hating another's opinions, we should learn to appreciate them.
If Boston can come together and prove that it's "Boston Strong" imagine the day that America comes together and proves that we are "America Strong" to the rest of the world.
