It feels like just yesterday classes were starting, syllabi were being passed out, and summer seemed so far away. Then just like that summer was around the corner. Every summer is approached with the same feeling, this summer is going to be the best one ever. In reality, this most likely won't be true, but what will be true, is that you will be overcome by all of the feelings I list in this article.
1)The pre-finals stress
Finals in high school were always viewed as a big deal, but once college came around you realized how trivial your Health final was. Your 50 question multiple choice test from high school turned into a 6-page paper, and an oral exam at the college level. Illness sets in due to stress, and all of a sudden it seems like your life is falling apart and you won't make it to summer.
2) Post final relief
The monkey is finally off your back, your room is all packed up, and you're saying goodbye to your campus for a few months. You throw all your notes and assignments into the trash, your books collect dust for a few years, as your mind eases off school.
3) The post school/pre-work grace period
You sleep in now that you don't have class, sports, etc. All of those crazy ideas you and your friends were talking about during school start to pop up again as your friends start to arrive home. You talk about how much you look forward to work, and making money. All the beach trips you're going to take, all the Facebook road trip articles you share with your friends begin to add up. You hit up your roommates and talk about how you need to meet up A$AP. Life is good
4) The beginning of work depression
Whether you take on an internship for the summer, or work at your local subway like myself, work is work and it can take a lot out of you. Money talks however, and after all the money you spent on Pizza, Chinese, Buffalo Wings (and drinks) during the school year put a beatdown on your wallet, and you need to build up that bank account for next semester. And when you're not working, your friends are working, so making plans becomes a struggle.
5) Summertime Sadness
This is the part of summer when you wake up go to work, come home and all you want to do is sleep. Your parents are going out more than you are. The highlight of your day is when you step outside to get the mail. Not even Netflix can pull you out of this funk because you are running out of shows to watch.
6) Mid Summer Crisis
Things pick back up again, this is around the entire month of July, the sun is always out, Fourth of July is around the corner, and you start becoming social again. My friends and I plan a camping trip towards the end of July to cap off the Mid Summer Crisis, just guys being dudes to celebrate the summertime, and to kick the saddness to the curb.
7) The "I wanna go back stage"
You start to miss your roommates, your campus, and yes even your classes. You miss the structure, and learning. You watch jeopardy to get the brain started again, and shake off the cobwebs, or do the crosswords in your local paper (The only reason they still print papers is for the crosswords). You start packing your bags even though school is 3 weeks away. You text your roommates to talk about whose bringing what, and start saying bye to your friends. But it's not a bye it's a see you later.
