Hayes Carll has always been known as a master of his craft, producing poetic and sometimes sarcastic pieces like "Drunken Poet's Dream" and "Chances Are". However, the Texas born songwriter has gone down a somewhat different path with his latest album, "Lovers and Leavers," released on April 8th, 2016. The album is a personal deeply, sometimes heartbreaking, personal look into the life of Carll, who has recently gone through a divorce and found love again.
The 10 track album is not without Hayes Carll's genuinely unique voice; full of passion and grit, Carll sounds better than ever. The true beauty to the album, however, is the level of songwriting being showcased. Each word is meticulously chosen for its power and meaning and every single lyric is backed with personal experience.
Produced by Grammy winning producer, Joe Henry, "Lovers and Leavers" is emotionally diverse. While some tracks have somber, regretful tone, the album as a whole leaves the listener hopeful, optimistic and maybe even uplifted. In particular, Carll includes a song called "The Magic Kid." The track is a tribute to his son Eli, a persistent young man who loves card tricks and has served as an inspiration for Carll as he describes in an interview with the Austin Chronicle. "The Magic Kid" is a very touching piece and an inspiring look into one of the singer's most important and influential relationships. The album is full of so many stand out moments including, "Love Don't Let Me Down" and my personal favorite, "The Love That We Need," a testimony to the relationships that sometimes break our hearts. "The Love That We Need" can be heard below:
Each song is unique and touches on a specific part of the songwriter's life, allowing the listener to explore and learn from Carll's personal experiences. Not only are the lyrics incredible, the delivery perfectly matches the content and creates the feeling that Hayes is talking to you personally, effectively bringing the music to life.
With "Lovers and Leavers," Hayes has truly outdone himself and allowed fans to profit immensely from what he has lost and gained. Listeners will feel themselves connect to the album on an extremely personal level and will grow with each listen. "Lovers and Leavers" is no doubt one of Hayes Carll's best works and is sure to be one of the best of the year. Click here to listen to the album in full and read Rolling Stone's take on the album.
