I never had an older sibling, and neither of my parents went to college. Therefore, I didn't have many people who could guide me as I started my freshman year at school. Here are six pieces of advice that I have for incoming college students as they start their incredible journey towards adulthood, independence, and success.

1. You are not who you were in high school.

It is so important to realize that in college, no one knows of your past. You have the ability to start fresh and become someone new. Any old reputations or rumors can be left behind.

2. Take advantage of opportunities while you can.

As a first year student, an array of opportunities are before you. Especially if you didn't in high school, join the clubs that you are passionate about. Become a part of Greek Life, or a community service organization. Take a language that you never thought you would speak. College is a time to explore your interests and who you are, and it is always better to start as early as possible so you can explore everything you can.

3. Your first love is not always your last.

If you are lucky enough to have fallen in love this young, and to have sadly lost that love, don't believe for a second that you won't again. Whether it is at some point in college of afterwards, the person you belong with is waiting for you. It just make time some time to find them. After all, the best things in life are worth waiting for.

4. Your college friends will be your forever friends.

Going off of that thought, you will meet some of the most amazing people in college. In high school and years prior, I never really knew or found the kind of people who were good enough friends. During second semester of my freshman year, I was blessed enough to have met people who I could cry on, spend a night out dancing with, and share ice cream with at 3 am.

5. Balance your school work and social life, you'll be proud of it in the end.

College is an exciting time. You have much more freedom than you ever have before, and it can be easy to get distracted. However, if you take classes that interest you, you'll convince yourself to become passionate about them. While it is important to find yourself in college and meet new people, academics are the primary reason why you are there, so make sure they are a first priority.

6. Cut your hair, alter your fashion, do something risky. Don't be afraid to take chances.

College is one of the most amazing times of your life. It is important that you try new things while you're young and have the time for them. Dye your hair a new shade or maybe get an extra piercing. Join a sport that you never thought you'd play or try a public speaking club. I can guarantee that taking chances and trying new things will help form you into the person you ultimately grow to become.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
