Unless you've been lost in the Himalayas, you're probably at least acutely aware of the new fad of the adult coloring book. Chances are you've scoffed at the thought of spending hard earned money on something as silly as a coloring book. I mean, those are for six year olds. Right? But maybe you've given in to this trend, like I have, and discovered a beautiful tranquility you thought you had left in the past with your Powerpuff Girls lunch box and pigtails.
Here are four basic necessities that will be fulfilled by owning a coloring book:
1. Stress Relief
Many adult coloring book covers claim to posses de-stressing capabilities, and they're not lying. After hours of studying or writing papers, coloring allows my brain to come to a much needed screeching halt after going a million miles an hour.
2. Mindfulness
In addition to the “Stress Relieving” coloring books, there’s also the “Mindfulness” coloring books. I believe that coloring gives you a heightened sense of awareness. Whether you’re heavy-hearted or overjoyed, coloring forces you to feel.
3. Nostalgia
Sometimes the real world can crush your spirit and you find yourself singing Paramore’s “Ain’t it Fun?” There may not be such a thing as time travel to take you back to living with Mom and Dad where your only responsibility was taking out the trash, but a pack of Crayola’s and a coloring book makes you feel like a kid again for at least a little while.
4. Accomplishment
Since the pictures in adult coloring books are usually mandalas or something else with a lot of miniscule spaces, sometimes one picture could take an entire week to finish. When you’re finally done, the feeling of accomplishment may surprise you. Go ahead; hang it on the fridge!
