Poetry On Odyssey: The Gift Of Adoption

With this poem, I aim to show people why adoption should become a normalized thing and how amazing it truly is.

Poetry On Odyssey: The Gift Of Adoption

I feel the stares and judgment

As we walk around.

They look at us like were from a different planet

And all I can do is frown.

My skin glows like pale white snow,

Whiles yours radiates a darker tone

And somehow, that signifies that were not family.

But you and I- we were raised together;

You are my brother,

You are my sister

I see no difference, blood or not.

I love you just the same,

Is that such an unearthly thought?

People treat us so differently

Yet, they tell me racism is dead

But, how can that be?

When I can choose what I want to be,

But, they don't have the same privileges as you and me.

Even though they were raised in the United States,

My mother still had to ruin what my brother thought could be his fate:

He could never be president

And that left a cruel dent.

He realized he will always be different

And never truly be accepted in society's eyes.

It created such a heartbreaking thought that made him want to cry.

But, they were put them here for a reason

And because of that, I will fight to make this not a treason.

They're my family and we fight for one another,

No matter what it takes

Because we love each other.

And when my sister came home with tear-filled eyes,

Saying the kids at school told she needs to wash her skin

So she can look like my brother and I

It made me look to the sky and ask "why"?

Why do you shame

In this day and age?

It's 2018,

People need to learn:

She is not dirty,

She is not some untamed beast,

She is a beautiful Hispanic that bleeds red just the same

As you and me.

She still learns American history

And feels patriotism for this country.

Because like it or not,

She is a USA citizen.

And that's what makes me an activist

To fight issues like this

Because I can't imagine my life without adoption in it.

Without my brother and sister, it would never be the same,

They have made me who I am to this day.

They have made me strong,

They have me loyal,

They have made me a better person

With good morals.

And I pity those that can't see this,

Because they're missing out on what adoption really is.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Whether you met your new love interest online, through mutual friends, or another way entirely, you'll definitely want to know what you're getting into. I mean, really, what's the point in entering a relationship with someone if you don't know whether or not you're compatible on a very basic level?

Consider these 21 questions to ask in the talking stage when getting to know that new guy or girl you just started talking to:

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
