"I've had a lot of regrets since I turned 25," Adele told The Rolling Stone. "And sadness hits me in different ways than it used to."
Over the past week, a very different woman re-entered the music industry than when she first graced us with her voice back in 2006. We have watched Adele transform from her heartbroken, 19-year old self into a woman who knows what she wants and will only allow memories to make her vulnerable.
While all three of her albums, "19," "21," and "25" seem to have a central theme of remorse, in her blockbuster third album we see a much more mature outlook on the feelings she has bottled inside her. We see her on top of the ruthless love game while in "21" we heard her battling through her heart-shattering flames.
With her growth comes new sound as well. More upbeat pop tracks such as “Water Under the Bridge,” “Send My Love (To Your New Lover)” and “River Lea” perfectly compliment and bring a more modern take on her decade-old vocal influences, Etta James and Ella Fitzgerald.
Powerhouse, intimate ballads are not forgotten in the new album and are a quiet reminder of why we all fell in love with Adele. With “All I Ask,” we really see a star shining through the vulnerable and graceful lyrics. Here she has painted us a picture of her on her final night with her lover, a goodbye, epic and powerful enough to resonate within the music industry for years.
The regrets made over the year in between her 25th and 26th birthdays are heard in the acoustic ballad, “Million Years Ago.” Listeners hear her plead, “I know I'm not the only one who regrets the things they've done. Sometimes I just feel it's only me, who can't stand the reflection that they see,” and in these moments we have a direct view of the transformed, more mature woman on this album.
With a four year absence from the music industry, her album has been a smashing success. Adele’s "25" album broke records within its debut week, selling 3.38 million copies in the U.S. Nielsen Music announced per Billboard. Nielsen Music began track point-of-sale music purchases in 1991; "25" is the first album to sell more than three million copies in a week, making the album the largest single sales week for an album in Nielsen Music history.
Billboard said that "25" will debut atop the Billboard 200 albums chart, giving Adele her second No. 1 album.
With all the success building up, Adele announced a British and European tour that will begin in Belfast in February.
So with open arms, we welcome you back Adele — and look forward to listening to your future chapters, no matter what number reads on the front of your future albums.
