Do We Actually Address Issues Or Do We Not Even See An Issue
Aisha Durand

Are we tackling the aftershocks of issues or the actual problems? Think about it. When an earthquake occurs, there are a range of other issues that arise from that one event: sanitation, clean up, rebuilding, etc. However, when it comes to social problems, we as a society rarely look at the start of the problem (the earthquake); instead we look at the aftershocks (broken buildings). How can problems be fixed if we merely bandage up the aftershocks? What makes this even more problematic is the fact that there is widespread visual neglect that a problem even exists in the first place. If people can't even acknowledge the aftershock, they won't see the underlying problem. For example, let's look at lower graduation rates of African-Americans in low-income communities. There is statistical evidence that African-American children graduate from high school at lower rates then their white peers. Now the usual response to this is how we can improve education as a whole and in those communities. This is important, but what doesn't get asked is why this is happening specifically to African-American children in low-income neighborhoods. In order to answer that question, we have to answer a series of questions. Why are white students with the same income levels as those children graduating at higher rates? Why is it so prevalent in the African American community? What are the other factors influencing this trend? How long has this trend been occurring or building? Is this just at one specific school or community? What if this is happening across the country? Can we still say that it is simply a "bad school" or is there something deeper? Those are a lot of questions, but they each serve a purpose in that they bring awareness to the actual underlying problem of systematic injustice. You see, you won't ever get to the actual underlying problem if you don't ask the harder questions. The thing is, most people won't even see the disparity in education as a problem in and of itself because you don't have to fix a problem you don't see. Not seeing the aftershocks is the first underlying problem we have to fix.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
