Religion plays a multitude of roles in everyday society. Although generally considered a controversial topic, it also can impact the views of other topics that continue to cause a lot of disputes. But, religious beliefs are also subject to a variety of stereotypes and assumptions. As a Christian, I have certainly had privileges that other religious groups have been denied. Even so, I regularly face certain stereotypes regarding views on everyday topics, such as abortion, gay marriage, and other highly disputed issues. These great assumptions have prompted me to start a discussion for the Christians (and other members of faith) who do not fall into the mold of what society expects us to be.
1. I'm sorry.
The media shows a side of Christianity that does not follow the guidelines that I believe in. Groups like the Westboro Baptist Church have built the Christian image as one of hate and disgust towards people who are not like us. But, we are not all this way. Although you might have met Christians who have treated you or others cruelly, we do not all share this similar belief. I value the impact of love in my faith. I want to love others wholly and my faith system teaches me to show others of the importance of these acts in my life. I'm sorry that you have experienced or seen the effects of Christians who don't operate with this idea.
2. But, also, I'm not sorry.
I'm not sorry for sharing bible verses and quotes. I'm not sorry for sharing religious memes. I'm not sorry for praying for you. I'm not sorry for saying that God is my best friend. In an age of political correctness, I am unwilling to pretend that God isn't a huge presence in my life.
3. My faith is an important part of my identity.
A VERY important part. This is a piece of me that impacts both the little everyday activities I participate in and the major holidays and other activities that I value. It's more than a simple choice, it is a lifestyle. It is the way that I chose to live day-in-and-day-out.
4. BUT, it does not define me.
There are so many layers to the person who I am and the beliefs that I hold dearly. You cannot know who I am from my faith alone. It is unfair to assume that you understand my stance on political policies, social issues, or other opinions that are generally conversations of conflict within our population. Would you like to know how I feel? Ask me. It's as simple as that.
5. God is a part of who I am.
It's as simple as that. I'm not asking you to understand my faith, or to accept it as your own, but my faith is as much a part of me as my heart or lungs. If you value me as a person, you will accept that my faith is a package deal.
6. I won't ever shove it down your throat.
There is a misconception in this world that talking about a topic automatically means that you are trying to convert someone. This will never be the case with me. You don't need to be afraid that I will ever change my view of you based on your religious beliefs (or, lack of). We can agree, or agree to disagree. It comes down to a case of respect.
7. I want to know your view.
I don't mind being disagreed with. Tell me your honest view or why you approach your religious beliefs in a certain way. I am very open to hearing you point of view. However, I expect my respect to be matched. I won't tolerate you calling my God an "invisible man", or other forms of disrespect. But, I will value your opinion and keep your thoughts in mind in how religion impacts your opinion.
Society has made us feel in many ways that the only way to accept a point of view is to agree with it. This view has harmed one of the greatest parts of life: diversity. If we force each other to hide our views and varied opinions, we will never gain the great gift of a new perspective. Educating and discussion may not lead to a total understanding, but a more attainable goal of seeing each other's sides. Be proud of whatever view you hold on this precious topic, and welcome the great rewards from learning about the various views that the people in your life offer. You never know what new idea will strike your fancy!
