The reason that modern television does so well, is because of writers, directors, and casting directors ability to tell a story, and create dynamic characters that we all can relate and grow to love.
Many shows even go as far as to address important social issues like, racism, same-sex relationships, and other controversial issues. However, that doesn't change the fact that there is a very prominent lack of disabled representation in television.
I understand that, when trying to portray the disabled in the media, there can be quite a few concerning issues. Much like:
"Will the audience understand the disability the character has?"
"Am I portraying the disability respectfully and accurately."
Or, "Is it alright for an abled-bodied actor to play a disabled character."
That's where the grey area is, and I believe the entertainment business should be doing better to cast disabled actors in roles with disability. Now, I understand that portraying any minority group can be difficult. I mean, you want the character to be loved and respected, but you also don't want to force the audience to love them. It should be real and special, and when it come to those with disabilities it can be difficult trying to get the audience to relate to something that many people can not begin to understand.
But, I promise, it's not just the portrayal of a certain role that effects that connection, it's the person who plays them that does. And, it's important that everyone get's to see an accurate representation of themselves.
Growing up, I wish I could've had a disabled character that I could've related to. More importantly, I wish I could've had a disabled actress that could've related to the same experiences I have struggles with my whole life. It would have made issues like body image easier to cope with.
Although, that's any issue anyone can experience those issues tend to hit a little closer to home for people with disabilities, and it would have helped me a lot to have someone that I could relate to and share those experiences with.
Representation in the disabled community only because able-minded people underestimate people with disabilities, which causes people with disabilities to believe these false realities of themselves; that they are incapable of doing more, but that's far from the truth.
So to all casting directors, get with the times.
