As a television major, my life consists of very little except for my fictional BFF's. In fact, I have even gone on record to say that I can’t be friends with someone if they haven’t seen The Office. That’s how important this is. I stand by this, but as long as you’re willing to accept the Lord Michael Gary Scott into your heart, I’ll give you a chance.
Now, readers, I really want us to be friends. Though The Office is not on this list because it’s a superstar TV show and everyone knows its awesomeness, I think these shows deserve your love and friendship just the same. So let’s go, these gems will make you laugh, question your morality, but best of all, you’ll have a bunch of new BFF's! Including me!
1)The League
FX. 2009-
Starring you fave comedy heartthrobs like Nick Kroll, Mark Duplass, and Stephen Rannazzisi, this show is filled with dark comedy and jokes that your mom would really hate. The show follows the guys who have a tradition of participating in a fantasy football league and annoying the hell out of one another as they each try to win their makeshift season trophy. I don’t follow football, but I would follow this show and cast to the ends of the Earth. And it would most likely be the most fun I could ever have.
2) Happy Endings
ABC. 2011-2013
My good friend told me to watch this show, and that’s when I knew she could hang. I found the love of my life on this show: Adam Pally. Pally shines in this show along with short-lived sitcom regulars like Zachary Knight, Casey Wilson, and Damon Wayans Jr. The cast of this show is what really makes it great. Loveable characters in lighthearted relationship conundrums are my cup of tea. It’s a feel-great show that will make you wanna call up your pals and go out for a drink and some laughs just like the gang on the show.
3) The Birthday Boys
IFC. 2013-
A sketch comedy show from the mind of Bob Odenkirk (Saul from Breaking Bad), that is so original and genius and lovely and sidesplittingly funny. If you don’t want to binge a show, this is a great choice. Just a few episodes here and there and you’ll be in love. You may not plan to binge it, but the witty skits revisited throughout the show will have you near to peeing in your pants it’s so funny. So strap on your diaper and prepare for hilarity.
4) Scrotal Recall
Netflix. 2014- (more please?)
Okay I know you think this name is gross. It’s really not that bad and I wish you would stop making that face. It’s so good. One afternoon my roommate and I found this show and upon reading the description, we knew we had to check it out. BEST CHOICE EVER. The British comedy follows Dylan, a quiet guy with a rocky relationship history, as he reaches out to his previous sexual partners to tell them that he has contracted chlamydia. Stop with the face again. So basically it’s a really sweet, funny, heartfelt journey where he investigates all of his failed relationships. That’s a really good idea, isn’t it!? Okay now go watch it! It’s a Netflix original and a home run. Watch it and then recruit three other people to watch it. Then tell them to each find three people.
5) Party Down
Starz. 2009-2010
Lizzy Caplan, Adam Scott, Ken Marino. Need I say more? This short-lived comedy follows a group of caterers in Hollywood. None of them want to be there. I kind of do though because every situation is funnier than the last. Each of them aspiring to be in show business, the brilliant cast hold back nothing when complaining and dissing their job and one another. Though it may be a little more difficult to find, this show is so honest and realistic that you won’t be able to walk away. Please watch it and show your respect for one of the greats that was gone too soon </3.
6) Undeclared
Fox. 2001-2002
I know you’ve heard of Freaks and Geeks (and hopefully watched it). This is the unofficial sort-of sequel. Seth Rogen, Jay Baruchel, baby Charlie Hunam, Jason Segel, and more rock your collegiate world in this masterpiece. It’s so sweet! It’s got so much heart and it came from the mind of Judd Apatow, so of course it’s great. If the all-star Apatow gang isn’t enough to convince you, I’ll say this: Amy Poehler AND Adam Sandler guest star!
7) Wilfred
FX. 2011-2014
If it’s 3 a.m. you should be watching this show. Not only is it an underdog, but it’s about a dog. So you’re definitely on board now, right? Jason Gann is a dog. Everyone sees him as a dog. Elijah Wood plays a man and he sees Jason – Wilfred – as a human jerk. The whole thing is so mysterious and convoluted and fascinating. Also hilarious. Is Ryan crazy? How did you not watch this sooner? Are you attracted to a dog? These are all some really deep questions that you’ll be asking yourself as you experience the Wilfred majesty.
8) Ja’mie Private School Girl
HBO. 2013-
In 2008, Chris Lilley gave us the gift of Summer Heights High. Now he’s back, with my favorite of his creations, Ja’mie (pronounced: ja-may). A super rich girl with a lot of opinions. It follows her day to day life at her school where she thrives and dear god is it funny. Chris Lilley plays the character of Ja’mie and perfectly captures what I assume super rich kids are like. All my friends are poor like me, so I wouldn’t know. Ja’mie is the worst person I’ve ever known but also some of the greatest TV. Ja’mie will also really help you out with your vocabulary seeing as she and her friends regularly popularize new terms. It’s so quiche.
9) The Mindy Project
Fox/Hulu. 2012-
This is a network show, so it’s not really an underdog. Except that Fox is full of really dumb executives who don’t know talent when they see it (RE: Freaks and Geeks, Undeclared, Arrested Development, etc.) so now it lives on Hulu! Created by Mindy Kaling and loved by millions, The Mindy Project is one of my all-time favorite shows. The writing staff pride themselves on “hard jokes,” so there isn’t much slapstick or looking into the camera and making a face like other popular sitcoms these days. Every line of dialog has something witty written into it. Order some chicken wings and put on your pajamas for this one because you are about to feel so at home with this show.
*Bonus*
If you aren’t bingeing Seinfeld now that it’s all on Hulu, you need to reevaluate your choices. Seinfeld is a titan of comedy. So unless you watched it as it aired back in the day, take some time and just really dedicate yourself to it.
