Whether it's your work holiday party, your family party, going out because you have extra time, or your usual New Year's Eve plans make sure you're ready for a hangover.
Plan ahead this holiday season, especially if you know you're going to be having a few extra drinks. No one wants to call in sick because their hangover has left them incapacitated. Use these tips and tricks I've found to keep you on top of your game and get you back in the office (or in the classroom) after the holidays.
1. Eat and drink up
Don't wait until the last minute to shovel pizza into your mouth before bed. Eat food before and while you drink. Mix in some water in-between sips or in-between drinks, since fluid from water slows the rate at which your body absorbs alcohol. Also, it always helps to drink a full glass of water before you head to bed. Obviously, the less drunk you get, the less crummy you’ll feel the next day.
2. Hair of the dog
In other words, have another drink. This is more of a short-term fix and if not paired with water as well will only help in worsening your hangover. But there is a scientific explanation as to why having another drink the next morning does help to curb a hangover.
3. Treat your symptoms
Tired? Have some coffee. Headache? Take ibuprofen. Upset stomach? Some Pepto-Bismol might help. Be careful on overdoing it though. Definitely make sure you're treating your dehydration with water.
4. Ginger Ale
Ginger Ale has ginger in it which can be soothing to an upset stomach.
5. Replenish your electrolytes
On the other hand, Gatorade and Powerade are both filled with electrolytes. Electrolytes help to replenish and re-hydrate your brain, which will in turn help to reduce your hangover. If you don't want all of the calories, you can go for the alternative coconut water.
6. Toast or crackers
Carbs can help bring your blood sugar levels back up the morning after a night out.
7. Prevention
No, I don't mean don't drink at all. What I mean is that you know your limit, and really you should know to limit yourself to one drink per hour, and don't forget as mentioned before to order a water with every drink.
8. Natural sugars
Re-hydrating with water is key, but making sure to include some natural sugars can also help. Juices like orange juice or grapefruit juice should be kept on hand before you spend a night out so you are prepared for the morning after. Tomato juice can also help to process alcohol faster.
9. Potassium
Replenish your potassium levels with bananas or avocados. Not only are you putting something into your stomach but you're helping to put key nutrients back into your body. (Pair that avocado with some toast.)
