Every dancer knows that dance is a lifestyle, in and out of the studio. When your life is primarily dance, you will pick up a few weird habits along the way.
Sporadic tap dancing:
...In line, under your desk, down the grocery store aisle -- sometimes you just can't help but unleash the inner Fred Astaire.
Using your flexibility:
...You turn off the light switch with your foot when your arms are occupied because your leg can reach up there just as easily as your hand. The usual.
Cracking unusual body parts:
...People give you weird looks as you simultaneously crack your knee, hip, neck, back, and elbow, but it doesn't phase you at all. Bring on the arthritis!
Low-key stretching in public:
...when you're so sore from rehearsal last night and you just need to stretch out your butt muscle by doing some weird lunge thing in line for coffee... totally normal.
Walking around in weird clothing:
...So you're wearing tights and booty shorts to the grocery store... but you have a bun in your hair so obviously you came from ballet class... oh, it's not so obvious? Oops.
Making up a dance to every song:
..."I'm sorry, I wasn't listening because I was too busy dancing in my head to this song. There was a fierce 24-count fouette section. Bummer that you can't see my imagination dances."
Dance clothes vs. real clothes... is there a difference?
...You specifically buy clothing because it would be good to dance in. Vice versa, you also wear pieces of old costumes out into the real world. You look fierce either way.
Always prepared and overpacked:
...You're the friend who always has bobby pins, hairspray, make up, ballet shoes, and pain killers in her backpack, because dancer essentials are... well, essential at all times.
Breaking out in choreography 24/7:
...Whether it's physically performing a routine in a non-stage setting or running over choreography in your head, your brain is constantly on choreography mode. Non-dancers are usually amazed by this.
