8 Ways To Have A Better Week

Two jobs, multiple exams, study sessions, lab reports, group projects, and making time to take your dog for a walk can be quite the balancing act. Especially if all of that is happening in one week. Don't get me wrong, college can be great. It's a time to meet new people, eat greasy fast food (because that's all you can afford) and discover who you want to be when you finally grow up. College is also a time where you barely have any time to breathe, let alone sleep. No matter how stressful and busy life can get during the semester, it is crucial to take a time out and do something non-school related in order to keep your sanity. Here are a few things to try this upcoming week to help you declutter your mind from all the studying and work you have been doing.

1. Keep a gratitude list for a day.

Write down all the little things you are grateful for, from butterflies and candles to books and music. No matter how big or small, writing down things that bring you joy is a great way to lighten your stress. You can even look back over your list when you need a little boost of encouragement throughout the week.

2. Go outside.

Winter is associated with depression, and it's no coincidence. The days get shorter, and the sun sets earlier. Lack of sunlight can make you tired and lethargic, so if the sun is shining just a little bit, go outside and get some natural light and breathe in the fresh air.

3. Do something before bed besides watching Netflix.

Sleep definitely plays a crucial role in health, and you need to be healthy to stay up to date on all the madness college throws your way. As relaxing as it is to lay down and watch one or two episodes before you go to sleep, you most likely end up binge watching your favorite show and stay up much later than you had planned. Try reading a book, or taking a bath before bed. This will help you unwind and give your brain a rest. Netflix will always be there tomorrow.

4. Listen to your favorite song.

5. Pet an animal.

How can you not be filled with joy when petting a cute, cuddly animal?! Puppies help make all of your stresses magically vanish.

6. Have a 30 second dance party.

If Christina Yang and Meredith Grey destress by dancing it out, then I destress by dancing it out. End of discussion.

7. Call someone you haven't seen in awhile.

Call your best friend that lives 5 hours away. Call your mom or dad. Just take the time to reach out to someone and get an update on their life. You never know how much weight can be lifted from just having a real conversation with someone special.

8. Mark something off your planner that you have been putting off.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
