We all have those moments where our creativity hits the pause button. Who knows why or how, but sometimes the creativity just isn't there. It's all too easy to get sucked into the rut and decide that you're not worthy of being a creative anymore. Instead, here are some ways to kick that lull out the door!
1. Search through a creative outlet.
Go on Pinterest for a few minutes and search to your heart's content. Find the most motivating inspirational quotes, scroll through DIY crafts, look at some amazing photography. Do whatever you want. Looking at creative things often helps spark the creativity inside.
The downside to this one is that there's a limit. Too much scrolling and you will become overwhelmed. Suddenly the creative ideas floating around in your head turn into judgement about whether your creativity is as good as someone else's. Also, Pinterest is a great way to procrastinate, and that's never good for creativity. So hop on Pinterest for a few minutes, but then get to work.
2. Take a shower.
There's something about taking a shower that clears your head. Whether it's the hot water or going through the motions of washing your hair, some of the best thinking happens when you're in the shower. Creativity tends to flow when we are calm and less distracted by the world. Showering is a great way to tune into your inner creative. Plus, you feel nice and clean when you get out.
3. Sleep.
You are not going to be your most creative being when your body is screaming at you to sleep. Who can hear the creativity singing when your body is screaming at you because it's so tired? Instead of trying to push through, give your body a break. Take a nap or go to bed for the night. Most likely you will wake up feeling refreshed with a clearer view on life.
4. Talk it out.
Simply talking through an idea can help it form. Whether you talk to a family member or friend, discussing your creative plans or ideas can help you become more motivated about the project. It can also get you out of the creative rut by bouncing ideas of someone else. Sometimes all you need is a person to talk to.
5. Figure out the details later.
Trying to let your creative juices flow while also editing your work just does not mix. One must come before the other. Try free writing, drawing, creating, etc. before you do any editing. That way you can get all of your ideas out before trying to clean any of it up. Sure it might look messy at first, but the point is that you are creating. You can go back and edit your creation at any time.
6. Reflect.
Go back and look through old projects. See what you have done in the past and grow from there. It's always fun to see how your creativity has changed over time, and reflecting on your past self as well as your completed projects can motivate you out of your lull. Remembering your roots is an important part of creating.
7. Believe in yourself.
Nothing stomps out the creative fire like low self-esteem. Believe in yourself, what you do, and why you do it. You are doing what you're doing for a reason, and sometimes remembering that can be enough to get out of your rut. Think about all of the reasons you chose to create in the first place and let that drive you. Forget about all of your doubts and judgments. Your self worth is not based on what others think of you or what others are doing. What does matter is why. Why are you creating? Let all of the reasons you wanted to create in the first place snap you out of the lull.
8. Leave the distractions behind.
If all else fails, leave the distractions behind. Put away any electronic device and find a distraction free zone. The could mean getting outside and going on a walk. Let your creativity rejuvenate while you are soaking in some nature. It could mean sitting down in a quiet place with a notebook and writing down whatever comes to your mind. Free write until you feel that light bulb turn on again. It could mean going to the gym. Who knows what kind of creative idea will come to you while running on a treadmill. Choose whatever you think will work for you and continue until you've successfully combated the creative lull.
