Winter is coming.

This will be my fourth winter while attending Humboldt State University.

With the exception of a few items on this list, you may want to double check your storage or ask the Humboldt State student in your life to prevent unnecessary purchasing and to reduce consomption.

While this list may include mainly practiacle items, they will make a student's life easier in the coming months.

1. An Umbrella

HSU's nickname is hills, stairs, and umbrellas for a reason. Trust me, this umbrella will not be something stuffed in your closet never to be seen again.

This umbrella will be there for you during your highs, lows and uh-oh moments.

2. Warm Socks

Fuzzy socks, short socks, long socks, more socks.

P.S. The stranger in design the better.

3. Dehumidifier

This probably won't work well if you live in the residence halls, but having a dehumidifier helps prevent mold. I'm really happy to have one.

4. Electric blanket

While I don't own one of these, the Humboldt State students who do both relish and use their electric blanket. However, check your housing policies because they may be not allowed. For example, electric blankets are banned from Humboldt State's resident halls.

5. Jackets

Any and all outerwear are welcomed here!

Chances are few Humboldt folks have enough of these.

Popular brands in this area include Patagonia, a local favorite Humboldt Republic, and basically anything from REI.

6. Rainboots

Yes, it's going to rain.

A lot.

Pro tip: Avoid heavy rainboots unless you are extremely committed. There's a ton of stairs on campus so think about what kind of rain boot would best fit your needs.

7. Insulated Klean Kanteen

With plastic water bottles not sold on campus and no free cups, most students rely on reusable bottles. At Humboldt State, you'll notice Klean Kanteen is a hit. Even if you don't go with a Klean Kanteen, consider avoiding bottles made of plastic.

8. Money or an experience

While money isn't personalized, it is something I have really appreciated receiving in the past. Another option is the gift of an adventure. Be it a plane ticket, a passport (which I just got as a wonderful gift), or a pair of concert tickets this will be appreciated.

However, double check date availability or affordability of the trip in its entirety.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
