As I thought about what I wanted to do with my life, college seemed to be fast approaching. After exploring many options, I decided I wanted to do something in law and also business. I soon had to see what majors could possibly lead me into the direction I wanted. Most people said philosophy or political science were the best majors to help me ready myself for law school. But ultimately I took one of the many counselor's advice which was: do what interests you the most. Anything could get you into law school, so why should I put myself through four years of school learning things that I didn't feel useful. History was the one major I was most interested in and is my current major. After a year of college, this is what I had to deal with due to my decision:
1. Assuming I Want To Be A History Teacher.
Just because I am a history major, doesn't mean I want to teach it. There are so many different career paths that people can take with having this major.
2. Essays, Essays, ESSAYS!
If I didn't like writing before, now I'm expected to write 1000% more with very little time to do them.
3. Having To Take European History.
Listen, I love history, but European just puts me dead to sleep because there are too many battles, too many names, and too many languages I don't speak.
4. Have To Be Good At Public Speaking.
Ways for History Professors to torture us: assigning many presentations that we don't want to do.
5. People Expect You To Know REALLY Specific Things.
No I don't know every President and no I don't know that really specific question about the Civil War. I'm still learning here.
6. Research Papers Can Kill You.
As if essays weren't hard enough, now we have to write pages on pages about pages on pages of research. This stuff can drive you insane.
7. Everything Must Have Evidence.
With History, everything must be proven because it had to come from somewhere. This transfers to life where I now start to doubt things because there is no evidence.
8. The History Professors Are Crazy.
Not crazy in the sense bonkers, but crazy in the sense they are really passionate about what they are teaching. And maybe just a little bonkers sometimes I've found.
