8 Signs You're The Dad Friend

We all know the typical mom friend: caring, gives great hugs, loves HGTV. But what about those of us that have the same caring qualities of the mom friend with added awkwardness? I identify as the dad of my friend group and if you relate to the following, you just might be a dad friend too!

1. You have a repertoire of bad jokes and puns.

You can always be counted on to whip out a corny joke when your friends need a laugh. From one liners to puns, you have an impressive collection of cringe-worthy jokes.

2. You hate physical contact.

You’d take a nice high five over a hug any day. And cuddling with friends? Forget it. Physical contact makes you super uncomfortable and your dad-like awkwardness doesn’t help either. Which brings me to…

3. You're awkward.

Your best tactic in dealing with an emotional friend is an awkward pat on the back. You can't help it, your bumbling nature is just who you are. Like many dads, your awkwardness makes you lovable and provides a lot of comic relief for your friends.

4. You're overprotective.

You’ll fight anyone who hurts your friends and any time one of them gets involved with a new love interest, you treat them with suspicion until you’re sure they’ll treat your friend right.

5. It's always assumed that you'll drive.

You’ve offered to drive so much that it can now be assumed that everyone will pile into your car for dinner dates and other outings. You like to believe that it’s because you’re the best driver out of the group, but realistically it’s because you like to play your own music.

6. You're full of tough love.

You’re never short of honest when your friends come to you for advice, even when that means you have to dish out some typical fatherly tough love. Life isn’t all sugar plum fairies and you’re often the one to remind your friend to get real in the most loving way possible. You also don’t do tears, which makes it a little more difficult. #dadproblems

7. You're not always up to date on what's popular.

You can’t even remember the last time you listened to the radio or watched regular television, so pop culture isn’t exactly your thing. Your friends can always expect you to be a little behind, but they’re always happy to clue you in.

8. You're loyal to the bone.

There is no one more loyal than a dad friend. You love your friends more than anything and will stick by them no matter what. Even if you’re sometimes emotionally distant and don’t give the best hugs, your friends can count on you to be there for them in the blink of an eye.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
