8 Reasons Tangled Is Disney's Best And Most Under-Appreciated Princess Film

Rapunzel's dream may be to see the floating lanterns, but mine is to see this film get the credit it deserves.

8 Reasons Tangled Is Disney's Best And Most Under-Appreciated Princess Film
The Walt Disney Company

One of the first thoughts I had when the Great Frozen Fever of 2013 began was that everyone seemed to have quickly forgotten about Disney's amazing 2010 princess flick, Tangled. Avid Disney fans and even parents who were just forced to see the film because of their kids kept bringing up how Frozen was the best Disney princess film since the company's Golden Age in the 90s, and Anna and Elsa were promoted on merchandise more than any other Disney royals. Throughout all of this, it felt like Tangled wasn't just ignored (like The Princess and the Frog, unfortunately, often is) but was straight up forgotten. So please allow me to remind you of the greatness of Tangled and explain why it deserves all the love you have to give.

(Spoilers for Tangled below. Obviously.)

1. The Leading Princess is Wonderful and Complex

Rapunzel is everything you could want in a Disney princess. She's beautiful, talented, kind-hearted, courageous, optimistic, and driven. But don't let those qualities convince you that she's a carbon copy of Disney's past princesses. Unlike most of the royals who came before her, she was raised by the film's villain, an abusive kidnapper who pretended to be her mother and kept her secluded from society; however, she never allowed her eighteen-year-long captivity to dampen her spirits, remaining hopeful and cheerful. Rapunzel's willing to risk everything she has, including her relationship with Mother Gothel and her own safety, to make her biggest dream come true, and she faces every obstacle along her journey with bravery and strength. Oh, and she grew up with magical glowing hair that could heal people. Just admit it—we all want to be Rapunzel.

2. The Love Interest Is A Charming Bad Boy With A Heart of Gold

At the start of the film, Flynn Rider is a charming, snarky, selfish thief whose only goal in life is to be "on an island all alone, surrounded by enormous piles of money." By the film's conclusion, he's the selfless, loving, and still charming husband to our leading princess. With Rapunzel's help, we see him learn to embrace who he truly is (Eugene Fitzherbert) and discover that there's more to life than money. He's easily one of the best male characters Disney's created thus far. And don't even try to tell me you aren't charmed by his smoulder; I know you're lying.

3. The Animal Companions Are Unforgettable

None of the animal characters in Disney's long history can match the sheer hilarity and greatness of Maximus and Pascal. As the only companion Rapunzel has during her seclusion, Pascal is loyal, adorable, protective, and the best friend Rapunzel could ask for. As the dedicated horse of the King's Guard, Maximus is fierce, focused, and hilariously determined to put Flynn Rider behind bars. These two make Snow White's iconic woodland friends seem as thrilling as vanilla ice cream.

4. The Villain Is Unlike Any Other

Disney has become famous for its iconic villains, but none are quite as fabulously evil as Mother Gothel. Her evil deeds include kidnapping, manipulation, verbal abuse, neglect, murder, and an extreme flare for the dramatics. One moment she's hilarious and theatrical, and the next she's absolutely terrifying and threatening. Through her hilarious quips (often inappropriately aimed at her "daughter," Rapunzel), audiences get to be thoroughly entertained while still glimpsing the horrible person beneath her motherly facade. Also, without Mother Gothel we wouldn't have "Mother Knows Best," and a world without that fantastic number would be as horrible as the world she warns Rapunzel about.

5. The Computer Animation is Astounding

Have you seen anything more visually stunning than the floating lantern scene? No. You haven't.

6. The Music is Amazing and Infectious

Alan Menken, known for creating the music in classics such as Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast, composed all the music in Tangled, and it's just as amazing (if not more so) than the music he's written in the past. It covers a wide range of styles and emotions—from a goofy, optimistic group number sung by the film's leads and a group of ruffians and thugs, to a romantic duet between Rapunzel and Flynn set during the gorgeous lantern scene. Prepare to be singing these songs for the rest of your life and loving every second of it.

7. It Has Disney's Best Comedic Moments

From great snippets of physical comedy to hysterical zingers courtesy of Mother Gothel, Tangled has the best humor of any animated Disney film, princess flick or otherwise. I dare you to watch it without laughing. It's pretty much impossible.

8. It Features The Cutest Royal Couple Ever (Sorry, William and Kate)

Once upon a time, I thought Aladdin and Jasmine were Disney's cutest royal couple, and then Tangled came along. Rapunzel and Flynn's relationship grows from one they use to achieve their respective goals to one that's full of love, hope, and selflessness. Flynn is willing to let himself die so Rapunzel can finally be happy and free; what other Disney prince has ever done such a tragically romantic act? And if a near-dying Flynn's line, "You were my new dream," didn't make you sob uncontrollably, then you must not have tear ducts.

So the next time you're relaxing in bed and wondering which Disney film you should watch, put on Tangled. And then watch Tangled again. And again and again. Because a day spent watching Tangled on an endless loop is obviously the...

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

The Importance Of Being A Good Person

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
