Hey, it's almost Thanksgiving! You know what that means: turkey, football, and time spent in your own room at home. Unless, of course, you don't go home. If you're still waffling over whether or not to go home over break, here are eight reasons who you should stay on campus this week.
1. No one else is here
That means no one will be on your floor to keep you awake with their loud music or weird laughter in the middle of the night (what could possibly be so funny at 2:30 am?). That also means that you can take long showers without feeling that crushing guilt (well, about hogging the shower, at least. I'm sure the environment won't thank you for those 30 minute showers).
Being alone is amazing--you're free to live how you want. In fact, you probably can do things you wouldn't be able to do with your drunken relatives breathing down your neck.
2. It's time to get work done
The term "break" has come to mean nothing to professors. "A whole week* without classes? Gotta make sure my students have some way to occupy their time. I'll just assign a research paper and 200 pages of reading--easy!"
Take this time to get your work done without pets to distract you.
*three business days and a weekend when you wouldnt've had classes anyway.
3. You can avoid messy family
Does anyone actually enjoy seeing their family for Thanksgiving? This huge meal provides your family members with the perfect excuse to get blackout drunk and to rant about their shitty kids while also yelling at said shitty kids. Staying on campus allows you to avoid the horror of hearing your sad Aunt Karen argue on the phone with her absent husband over his "business trip."
4. You learn to fend for yourself
Many schools close their dining halls over break, making it the perfect time to learn how to cook for yourself. Let yourself reenact Chopped without the fear the judgmental glances from fellow hallmates behind your back.
5. It's a chance to meet other students
Chances are, you won't be the absolute only student on campus (probably just the only one on your floor). See this break as a way to connect with fellow students-- maybe even the international students! This Thanksgiving, instead of having dinner with your parents, talk with people from around the world who also can't go home.
6. You can catch up on sleep (because your roommates aren't there to sexile you)
Sure, you'll have work. But this break also lets you catch up on sleep without being interrupted or sexiled by your well-meaning but horny roommate.
7. You won't have to buy a plane ticket
If you are actually contemplating staying on campus this Thanksgiving, there's a pretty big chance you live far enough away from your school to take a plane. Airfare is pricey; don't drop $400 dollars on a round trip plane ticket. A huge portion of your time would be spent in the airport, waiting to get on the plane, staring at other people while pretending you aren't actually staring. Really, it's just not worth it.
8. It's fun!
Staying on campus feels like a game. You can go anywhere that's unlocked--I'm not condoning anything illegal, but Thanksgiving break on campus provides the perfect opportunity to explore your college in a way you never have before. Go check out where that staircase leads (honestly, probably to the roof, but you never know until you try).
