8 Non-Academic Things We Learn In College

College teaches us important things in and out of the classroom.

8 Non-Academic Things We Learn In College

In college, we learn a lot of things besides what we need in order to graduate and be successful. Besides teaching us academically as well as learning about ourselves, college teaches us indirectly so much more.

1. We're Forced to Learn How to Cook

We cannot live off of takeout food, no matter how much we want to. When we learn how to cook for ourselves we learn how to cook for others.

2. We Learn How to Take Care of Someone Who is Sick

When you go out with your friends at night and someone might have had one too many, once you successfully get them home you go into action. You know to lay out everything they will need when they wake up and you check up on them to make sure they are okay throughout the night. Remember when you thought you could not handle someone getting sick? That will change after your first semester at college. In fact, you become a pro by the time you have kids.

3. We Learn How to Be There When We're Needed

College can be tough and sometimes your friends crack under the pressure. You learn exactly what to do in order to make them feel okay again, whether it is a night out with all your friends or a simple night in eating ice cream while watching their favorite movie or Netflix show.

4. We Learn How to Handle HeartBreak

Relationships in college can be tricky and sometimes you end up listening to those heart break playlist's after a nasty ending or learning that the frat boy you thought was so great really was not that great. You learn how to get over it and how to move on from it which will make future heartbreaks in the future a little easier.

5. We Learn to Appreciate Our Parents

Our parents do so much for us on a regular basis that college helps us understand. In high school, your parents were the "most annoying people you have ever met," and now you find yourself calling them all the time to ask about the littlest things as well as just to talk. You learn to appreciate the amazing people your parents are.

6. We Learn Time Management

Time management is crucial in college. We can't always pull all-nighters and we eventually figure out how to manage all our time to get our work done and have fun. Especially for those that have jobs in college.

7. We Learn How to Live Away From Home

Even though our hometowns will always be there, we never want to stay there. With college, it can help teach us how to be independent from our families and hometowns to become our own person.

8. We Learn to Appreciate Little Things More

When our professors bring donuts to class, when your roommate folds your laundry during a busy week, or when a stranger pays for your coffee are all examples of little things we learn to appreciate in college. We begin to realize that the little things are as important as the big things.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
