Looking at different cultures from around the world, the one thing many of them have in common is music. Every culture has some form of music that they listen to on a daily basis. For many of us growing up in the late 90s, we were exposed to a lot of different music. Looking back now, 90s music had some of the best lyrics. They’re real no matter how harsh the reality is-- they may cover it with a nice upbeat tune, but the lyrics are something that should be taken seriously.
1. “So much to do, so much to see. So what’s wrong with takin’ the back streets? You’ll never know if you don’t go, you’ll never shine if you don’t glow.”
All Star- Smash Mouth
Many of us know this top hit from Shrek, but it is more than just the movie soundtrack it was on! In 1999, Smash Mouth told us to get up, do something and go see the world. You will regret it if you don’t.
2. "Sometimes I feel like I don't have a partner. Sometimes I feel like my only friend.”
Under the Bridge- Red Hot Chili Peppers
Red Hot Chili peppers taught us early in the 90s that sometimes you get down, but it will be okay. Everyone gets like that sometimes-- just turn up some music, preferably The Chilis.
3. “It's something unpredictable, but in the end it's right, I hope you had the time of your life.”
Good Riddance- Green Day
Green Day told us in 1997 that no matter what we do, we can’t control life. So hang on and remember the good things; it will work out eventually!
4. “Because maybe, you're gonna be the one that saves me and after all, you're my wonderwall.”
Wonderwall- Oasis
In 1995, Oasis taught us that soulmates are a real thing. Your soulmate can save you from anything-- love hard and don’t be scared.
5. “All I can say is that my life is pretty plain. You don't like my point of view. You think that I'm insane”
No Rain- Blind Melon
Blind Melon taught us in 1992 that being in love makes you do crazy things, but it is totally worth it! Do not let what people think get to you!
6. “I’ll make it to the moon if I have to crawl!”
Scar Tissue- Red Hot Chili Peppers
In 1999, the Red Hot Chili Peppers told us to never give up. No matter the dream, you will get to it eventually; do not ever give up!
7. “Work sucks, I know.”
All The Small Things- Blink 182
In 1999, Blink 182 showed us that no one enjoys work but it’s just something we all have to do. Get over it-- you will be doing it your whole life. The small things will make up for the boring work days.
8. “Life is too short so love the one you got”
What I Got- Sublime
Sublime taught us in 1996 that life is not something to take for granted. You never know what will happen so live your life the way you want to!
