I’ve gone to church almost every Sunday for my entire life, and I most certainly enjoy it. Not only have I gone to the services, but I have partaken in many other church affiliated activities. I know without a doubt that these activities and experiences are unique to churches and aren’t experienced by people who didn’t grow up going to church.

1. Going to kids activities on Wednesday nights

When you were in elementary school, you probably spent Wednesdays thinking about going to church later in the day. You may have even kept all of the craft projects you did while you were at church on Wednesdays because it was so exciting to you.

2. Old people complimenting you on every single outfit

Whenever you came into contact with any older person at church, whether it was after the service or during greeting time, you would always be told how cute you look. It didn’t matter if you were dressed to the nines or had on a t-shirt and jeans; someone would always compliment you on your outfit.

3. Summer mission trips

Some of your fondest memories of church are probably taking a mission trip with members of the congregation. Going somewhere to serve and give back is always a blast, no matter what kind of work you have to do.

4. Vacation Bible School

Chances are, Vacation Bible School was your absolute favorite church activity. Nothing much beat several consecutive days of nonstop crafts, games, music, and food.

5. Outings with youth group

When you got a little older, you joined youth group, and it involved many trips to the pumpkin patch, bowling alley, and mini golf course. You undoubtedly have many crazy stories to tell about these adventures.

6. Using the activity kits when you were bored during the sermon

Every little kid knows the pain of having to sit in the pew and be well behaved during the sermon. It always helped when you were given one of the little activity bags with coloring pages in them.

7. Getting dressed up and wearing a hat on Easter

Easter Sunday was always a call to get super dressed up and take a bunch of pictures. When you were a kid, this also probably involved wearing a straw Easter bonnet with the annoying elastic strap.

8. Watching VeggieTales all the time

Last, but certainly not least, any church-grown kid can attest to the fact that the VeggieTales movies were watched more than any other movie. To this day, you can probably still sing all the songs, will unashamedly announce your love of the franchise, and definitely know what happened to Larry’s hairbrush.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
