It's called post binge-watch depression, and it's a real thing.
No, I'm not talking about that very melancholy study University of Texas of Austin did, claiming that binge-watching makes you lonely and depressed.
I am talking about that sudden depression you feel after you binge-watched your face off for the weekend and then your new favorite show . . . doesn't have another season available.
We've all been there -- you were eight seasons deep, and then the show just got canceled or Netflix still hasn't put the new season up. It's traumatizing truly that good things must come to an end, but it's not all that easy to cope with. We typically go through a series of emotional stages, specifically eight.
1. Anger
Why isn't there another season of Friends? When will the next season of Stranger Things be released? How can The Carrie Diaries just end like that?
2. Re-binge
It's not over until I say it's over, maybe I missed something. I need to analyze the character's actions deeper. I also need to re-watch my favorite couple moments to make sure they're my still favorite couple.
3. Searching for fellow fans amongst friends
"What did you think of the show?"
"Who were your favorite characters?"
"What do you think will happen next?"
"Do you think they will get together?"
"Do you think they'll find her mom?"
"That part was sooo funny . . . oh you don't remember? I'll quote it exactly so you do remember."
4. Research
There must be a gossip website or blog out there with people who have detailed opinions about the show, and I NEED TO READ THEM. Where is the press videos? Did they have a comic-con panel I need to watch? Behind the scenes and bloopers are necessities!
5. Recruitment
Oh, you haven't seen the show? You have a Netflix and Hulu account. I'm sure you could find some time to watch it. The current show you are watching isn't as good. I think this show you'll really like. Let me know how you like it . . . have you started it yet?
6. Character Association
Hello, it's me, Blair Waldorf. #WhatWouldBlairDo #HeadbandsForLife
We're besties like Blair and Serena!
He is tooottaallly a Dan Humphrey.
I'm just waiting for my own Chuck Bass.
7. Depression
What am I supposed to do now? It's really over. I am out of articles to read. I made all my friends watch it. I will not be able to watch a new episode for a while . . . or never.
8. Acceptance and Appreciation
This show, it's apart of who I am now. I am a better and possibly also worse person because of it. Those hours of my life I will never get back and I couldn't be happier.
And not to fear, after you have completed these stages post binge-watching . . . you'll find another show to watch.
